Despite the rather 'iffy' photo this looks to be seriously interesting. Figures of Highlanders offer painters some
testing and rewarding challenges, and this particular version appears to be among the best. If you produce a
better picture ( complete with finished arms ) showing more of what looks like some particularly nice detail,
I'm sure you'll spark a lot of positive responses........... me for one.

Agreed.

Looking forward to final shots of what looks like a promising figure.
Couple of minor points, would prefer the sporran to be slightly deeper {easily done by rounding out the bottom) and both it and the dirk would benefit from visible hanging arrangements.
Only other thing is the rim around the targe, can't think of any I've seen with that feature to the front. The norm would be for the leather to be pulled over from the face and fixed at the rear.
Definitely has the making of a first class and pretty accurate piece.
Cheers

First encountered this figure on the Russian site 'Sculpt and Paint' where a correspondent suggested that Highlanders
of the 18th century did not wear beards. I find this a bit difficult to believe...anybody got any thoughts ?

Comment is way too general. I believe that lairds etc and lowland Scots in the main probably didn't favour beards much but the likelyhood is this was less of a fashion requirement in the heilans.
The beard on the figure is maybe a bit too hipster but it does look good and adds character .

Have to agree with Del on this. The access to and availability of the means to shave were also a factor. I don't imagine that razors were widely available in the Highlands to other than the wealthy, and using the edge of a knife is not an efficient means of getting a smooth finish (try it sometime). Most Highlanders would have had more important things to worry about, I imagine. Cetainly most paintings, etc from the period that I have seen show hairy faces.
