Don't want to disappoint you but I've asked that question two years ago and unfortunately didn't receive an answer. :(

Short answer...ZILCH

Nada, nothing, nil...however with the proper Doctor's note you can score some killer green bud legally at one of San Francisco's many friendly neighborhood medical marijuana dispensaries!!!! If you're into that kind of thing, that is, but there's nothing worthy of the name "hobby shop" anywhere in the metropolitan San Francisco Bay Area. There's D&J in Campbell.(San Jose--about 40 minutes south of SF) Eh. And Gunning's in San Anselmo (Marin Co.--30 min north of the GG) haven't been there in years, so I hope its still there. And there's the Hobby Co. of SF on Geary and 20th, which tries so hard to be everything to everybody they wind up being nothing to nobody.
Sorry, but that's the lay of the land. There's a great second-hand bookstore (remember those, before the internets?) on Clement and 6th--Green Apple by name--good history section. As far as sights to see of a military nature, there's a WWII USN submarine and a Liberty ship and across the bay is the USS Hornet. Beneath the GG Bridge, there's an old ACW era brick and mason fort--great place btw to get snapshots taken of yourself and the little lady with a pretty dramatic background. If you have the time, be sure to make arrangements to get yourself on a tour of Jacques Littlefield's Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in Portola Valley (Los Altos? about 30-45 min. south)
IT IS AMAZING! It's a collection of over 100 tanks and armored vehicles fully restored--it's something else. Have fun and bring a sweater and go see a Giant's game. (they really suck this year so it'll no problem scoring a ticket)

Vergilus--sorry, I missed your post, I must have been sick.

No probs, john ! I've seen the ships and fort and I've been to that great bookshop. It's a great city although it misses a hobby shop. Maybe there's one somewhere in the mist
