I'm sure this'll do most of what you expect it to but you may find it a bit lacking in oomph under load (see reviews). But slow and steady is the best way when it comes to grinding off surface details so maybe this is no bad thing!

It's a variable-speed unit and it starts from zero which is actually a really good feature, since you can easily use it to work on plastic without generating enough heat for it to melt.

Thanks guys, the attraction of this one is that it's cordless.
It appears however that it may only be available in 1 of their stores, according to search.
Makes me wonder if it's been withdrawn because of problems.
Cheers
Derek

I checked out ebay and got a cheap dremel clone for a similar price as this one although mine is not cordless. Does the job I wanted it for although it does lack power.

its tricky - for some jobs you need power- when you "wood turn " your pieces of magic sculp, for other jobs you need control and slow speed - like polishing. Those Maplin ones dont go slow enough in my experience, it was a bit of a let down and they usually dont have enough power - so they are quite mediocre ( may be its just my demands).

Also you will find that collets on these dont last long - again it may be how I used them - as I went heavy on making suiseki wood bases - the drills couldnt be firmly fixed and collets wore out quickly.

And the biggest disappointment is that you cant fit a dremel multitool head on Maplin ones - I think Helm or housecarl shared a link not so long ago, I bought one - and its gathering dust in the box :(

Its worth to shop around and may be spend a bit more- but to have exactly what you need.

Also there is an attachment available in Machine mart that you can attach to dremels and power drills - it leaves you with a dentist-like tool in your hand instead of a bulky dremel

Del boy bring it on sunday if you want and I will bring a grinder with me should have a tool to do the job on the spot. If anything goes wrong I will get Brian to bring it over.
Maplins is in Gt. Western Rd. and well worth a visit and browse

Thanks again guys. This is very much a one-off job, when finished I doubt if I'll use it again hence the reason to keep costs down.
Don you can't get better than free, so your kind offer is much appreciated
Derek

The worst of both worlds....The Gnome of Stewarton, (he's the second richest man in Scotland btw), someone who worked in Aberdeen where he learned to keep his wallet tight and Offshore where he learned to keep his........well you get the idea folks;)
