Finished this one in May and as ever wanted to 'individualise' the figure.
Being a fan of the series Vikings I thought the model was a fairly good match for Donal Logue who plays King Horik

He like the hero of the story Ragnar Lodbrock is an historical character with an interesting bio. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horik_I ok it's Wikipedia but looks ok.
Anyhoo to the model it's from Steve Kirtleys in house SK range and at first I have to admit I wasn't taken with it ....... how wrong ....... it's a cracker with lots of textures including superbly sculpted fur.
It was a joy to paint ........ as ever apologies for photo quality but hopefully you can get a sense of it.

I too, love the series and you have done a great job on this figure. nice work on the shield.
regards
Bob

Cheers Bob, was going for a stretched pig skin look to the shield with the skin colour showing through the old paint.

You've certainly achieved that effect. It's a very well painted figure in a matching setting.

Cheers,

Hang on a minute! .. This looks suspiciously like Colin (crf), our 'Canadian', friend! I did wonder why he chopped his 'Locks-off'.:D ..

Del! great likeness.(y)..and lovely painting.

Mark.

OhMa'Gosh, Del: This presentation is just beautiful. Your
base, just by itself has so much detail to enjoy. Yet the base
doesn't overpower the figure. I love the two colours together,
The green of his "tunic(?) and the yellow-orange of the shield,
And then you use the greens again in the rocks, the cliff.

Congratulations, Del. You are one fine artist.

Andrew, Mark and Rick.
Thanks very much for your support. Glad you like the effect.
Personally my favourite bits are the wee sea shells and orange anemones on the base.
The shells are simply milliput and the anemones are artificial moss tufts soaked with super glue.
I try to make a point of using borrowed colours, mixing a little colour from each adjoining item.
Similarly I usually include a lot of the groundwork shades on the lower half of the figure.
Don't know if thats terribly clear.[/quote]

Ok, Del:

It is perfectly clear to me, except for your comment
"and the anomeones are artificial moss tufts soaked with super
glue". OK, I've never tried that. But I think I see the advantages
of doing this as the "tufts" really stand up and don't wilt
because of all the painting on those items. Am I close?

I have always liked this sculpt and was close to getting it a couple of times - one of the more 'restrained and realistic' Viking figures I think. I like your version very much Del, the colours are very natural and go well with that fantastic groundwork - you can almost smell the sea when you look at it.
Cheers

Don't hold back Mat. It is perfectly posed to fit in any scene. Would look good outside the entrance to a hall.

Seen this fella in the flesh, and it's a cracking scene by Derek. Now ,if we could just get him to ditch the box brownie, you too could share the work he puts in to his figures.

Here we go off on another tangent:LOL:. I occasionally give my Olympus OM 2 a fondle to remind myself what a real camera feels like . Anyway, great job Derek, I love the groundwork and your photography is sooooo much better than mine :(:).
Best wishes, Gary.

I know what you mean Gary. 30 years or so ago I had an interest in photography and have still got a couple of high end Cannon SLR's somewhere.
When digital stuff came in I splashed out on an early Olympus and from that point on got lazy just replacing them with compacts. Now I can't bring myself to fork out £600 for a decent Digi SLR and can't really be bothered re-learning what I've forgotten.
