The Charities are now a business with only a very small % going to the actual cause. We used to give to several charities and I stopped them all because they were never satisfied. We only give to appeals (Nepal) and our local Dogs rescue where we can see where the money is spent. On Nepal isn't this where Foreign Aid money should be spent-not supporting money grabbing dictators in Africa.
So sorry to hear about this lady who has been a victim of the very institutions she spent her life supporting.

Once you have established a pattern of giving, many charities see you as an easy mark and will hound you mercilessly if you stop. Even the good ones. Its probably easier to guilt someone who has shown they care into giving more than they can afford than it is to find a new donor. Also many charities use paid fundraisers who get a large chunk of the donation. I always ask if the canvasser is a volunteer and turn down anyone who phones me.

Too sad but its a story that is probably repeated many times a day and the media never picks it up.

Charities can be hard work, I subscribed to a Donkey charity once, expected some photos maybe the odd email saying how Ned was doing. All went a bit pear shaped when some git turned up with a horse box.
