Hey Guys!

I have a dilemma and its driving me up the wall!!

Im trying to sculpt a Russian Padded Coat and it plain looks like crap. I just cant get the small folds and wrinkles to look right, not even close to right. So Im asking you guys for some suggstions on how to go about making them. What I want to do is make it look like the picture below.

Thanks in advance!

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about sculpting....

I'll give you my idea anyway

Can you use something with this small detail and press it in to the medium?
I am thinking you could find several cloth textures and gently press in to the medium in order to transfer the pattern?

I don't know if that makes sense or is considered "cheating" in the sculpting realm

Hey Keith!

Thats kind of funny, I was just thinking about trying that as I logged on. I was thinking something like a sheet of paper, crunching it up into a ball and then unwrap it and try it, might be worth a try. Thanks for the input, gonna go try that now :)

Hi Anders,

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. Looks great!

Perhaps more small "puckers" along the seams.

Keep up the great work. (y)

Hi Anders

Don't know what you're worrrying about, it looks fine to me.

Rememer that those jackets weren't that padded, I suspect that when you give it a rubdown it will look just as you want it.

Hey Guys!

Guy, I am sitting here playing with aluminum foil after paper not working too hot. looks promesing so far.

Jason,
Thanks, but it just looks so 'artificial' and rough. Maybe it will work, but I want to try the aluminum foil stuff ans see the results. I did add some 'puckers' on the back with limited success.

Thanks guys! Keep the ideas comming!

Anders,I echo Jason's suggestion to your problem;more puckers and creases with the back of your X-Acto should help here.Perhaps if you think the resulting effect is too rough, you could smooth it down with your steel wool or Scotch-brite.That's how I would do it anyway. My 2 cents worth.Cheers
Kenneth

Hey Guys!

Here is the test run of the pressed aluminum pressed against wet putty. It will be less harsh after rubbed with steel whool. What you think?

looks good for an underlying texture-layer, follow up with some puckering as per Kenneth and Jason mentioned..

a tool like a pin would work good and let the putty set up a fair amount so that when you press there's a little bit of 'surface-tension' on the putty..

Hey Gordy,

Yeah, that was just a test run, will add more small folds like JAson and Kenneth suggested. I have now sanded off all the detail that was there before and Im starting a second shot at it! If I suddely sease to exsist and quit posting it is because I just breathed half a pound of Magic Sculpt dust.

Anders, please put on an INDUSTRIAL size respirator if you intend to sand so much putty at one go We sure don't want to lose such a talented soul as yourself so early in life, now do we ? Take care and happy modelling.Cheers !
Kenneth

BTW,your test run looks very GOOD (y) Keep it up !

Hey Guys!

Here is the front reworked with the 'crunched aluminum foil' method.

The basic layer of putty applied and the foil pressed agains it.

And the puckering completed! I am very pleased with the results compared to before, it looks more used and interesting now. What you guys think?
