Simple question really...

Will Humbrol Matt Cote (not to be confused with Humbrol Matt Varnish 49) work over oils? Or will it utterly destroy them?

Rudi :)

I used matt cote (the edgy glass bottle) over oils and had no problems.
However I am a slow worker and the oils had at least 14 days to dry.

Only thing to watch is that your bottle is well stirred so no white bloom forms on the model and avoiding brush marks can be diffcult on larger areas.

Many people use the famous Testors matte with an airbrush and get excellent results.

Hello Rudi,

There's a slight chance that the Humbrol would 'lift up' the oils as they both use similar solvents/thinners. To be on the safe side, I'd use acrylic matt varnish.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't paint much lately...but whenever I've needed a matt coat in the past, for use over oils...I've used Winsor & Newton Acrylic Matt Varnish and I've had absolutely reliable results with just a couple of very thin coats, it dries very quickly and gives a very matt finish.
I've had mixed results with the Humbrol you mention and tend not to use it.
Whatever you decide to use though...I would recommend trying it first on some similarly painted scrap material just so you are sure as to what your results will be.

All the best.

Roy.

Thanks folks...

I had a look for the infamous Testors matt cote over the weekend... nothing in my neck of the woods... :(

Can you recommend any particular brand of acrylic matt varnish?

Rudi

Hi Rudy
i 've used humbrol matt cote on oil No problem at all.
i've left the oil paint dry for about 1 month before spraying 3 or 4 coats of matt cote over 2 days. THE RESULT IS GOOD.
GOOD LUCK
Roberto ;)
