Folks, not long ago I broke out an old tin of Humbrol as it was the perfect color for my application. It was one of the old formula before the "Super Enamel" (optimized for airbrush performance?)formula came out. I have switched to acrylic for undercoats. I bought a tone of acrylics anticipating switching from oils. I couldn't quite make the transition. The switch was precipitated by my dissatisfaction with Humbrol's "Super Enamel" formula. The old formula tin that I used recently filled me with nostalgia for the old Humbrol days. It really is a superior medium IMO. My question is this; Is it the same "Super Enamel" that was on the shelf 4-5 years ago, or is more like the original formula?

Hi John!

To my knowledge it is still the same. But the Humbrol varies depending on the hue. Some are betters than others.

Stay away from 34 White and 24 Yellow. I only use them when mixing colours and the only small amounts.

Cheers

Ditto on Janne.

I recently tried new formula white 34 whose ancestor I've used for about two decades. This may be better on airbrushes but its a PITA to brush. As I use only acrylics with the airbrush I would prefer good brushing ability.

I ended up buying Testors enamel matt white which behaves much better. Besides I like the screw cap better than the "tins of yesteryear" which always dry out over the years.

Janne is also right that some colours are better than others and there might be variation in the batches too, or maybe I'm just seeing things.

Makes you wonder what's going on at Humbrol.

I only use a few colors of the Humbrol line and they have changed their formula over the years. I find that by using a battery opperated mixer the coverage is much better with the new cans. For the other colors I use Floquil.
