Hussar Bust WIP

This one is going on forever so thought I would just bring it in here. Verlinden Westphalian Guard Hussar 200mm. Skin tones in oils, all else in acrylics, braid on pellisse needs last acrylic highlights, as does fur. Shako plate in oils/printers inks. As usual, my photos skin tones are a bit too red. Comments/ideas welcome.

Richard, as you mentioned, the skin tones look to be going too red for my liking. I think the rest of the piece is coming along very nicely!

I tend to agree with Jay on the skin tones. Maybe punch up the highlights? BTW, you got a PM Jay.

I like it too. An interesting subject, neatly painted. The face perhaps could do with a bit more highlight but I really don't think it is too far off someone, a veteren cavalryman, who has spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun. Very nice!

I have a feeling the skin tones are picking up a lot of the red from the uniform. I've seen this happen often. Painting overall is superb. Nice work Richard!

I like the way you did the yellow braiding on the shako and his eye's. I also think the fleshtones are a bit red, it could be a reflection off the dolman. What are your mixes on the fleshtones? Chris

The fleshtones have been re-worked a bit and also better pics upcoming ( these are too red cast ) next week.

Base acrylic coat of Citadel Foundation Calthan Brown + 10% Hormagaunt purple. This drys quite dark.

The oils by W&N, Old Holland and Holbein, were applied by both wet blending and glazes over dry oil paint, and in some spots just over the basecoat: Naples Yellow Deep, Yellow Brown, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Brown Pink, Madder Lake Deep, Mineral Violet, Oil Holland Cremnitz White ( last of the lead base whites around so very opaque)
