I am wondering where do peopel get their ideas when painting heraldry for medieval subjects. How do you decide how to paint shield, tunics etc? In other words what is a good reference with lots of colour pics and designs?

Go to your local book store and look up the history seciton and you will more then likely find several books on the topic of Heraldry. There are several good books on the subjects with tons and tons of different patterns and designs.

The internet is also a good source for information although you might have to go through a lot of junk to find some good stuff.

Merci Pascal pour ce lien (en français!!) que je ne connaissais pas!!! Cela donne de belles idées de peintures et de très longues heures de travail en perspective. A+

The Osprey Men-At-Arms series has a book on medieval heraldry that's full of examples & history of German, French, & English heraldry.
