Hi Greeny,
Great sculpt so far.
In response to your question of how feathers are attached, is it a war bonnet as in the attached pic ?

Not sure if you can read print describing how it's done, if not let me know and I'll type it up and resend.

Cheers Ken

Hi Greeny,
From the pics of Wes Studi it appears he's wearing what is known as a
' roach ' style headdress. It was a custom observed by certain tribes of cutting all the hair from the head except for a narrow strip running from the crown to the base of the neck. Hair from various animals such as Deer's tail, Porcupine guard hair and Beaver would then be attached to origin hair.

In regard to how to attach the feathers I'll quote from the page of text I originaly sent.
Headdresses of this type wrer made from a piece of thin rawhide or heavy tanned skin six inches in width . It was then folde along it's long dimension and holes were cut in the edge of the fold through which the eagle feathers were passed. These were attached by either cutting the feather quill and tucking it back into itself so as to form a loop or, alternately, a small wooden pin was pushed into the hollow quill of the feather.

Also if you go into www.powwows.com/gathering you will find a mine of information, so enjoy.
Hope you're able to find the info you need to finish the sculpt and I'll keep watching your progress.
Cheers Ken

Hi Greeny,
Beautiful bust!
Colleague Ken Farrar has correctly prompted - consider variants 'roach' for PowWow.
For a long time I moulded the dancer for "1Gards" (in a photo K.Sudjin's painting).
Two distinctions fastening of feathers on 'roach'-
- 1 free to adhere
- 2 to put a feather in "glass" for a suit powwow.

Yours faithfully.

P.S. Probably we soon to look ' Dances with Wolves 2 ' - ;) -
(The Holy Road).

Nice sculpt, Greeny.

As for details of the headdress (and clothing in general) , my advice is to refer to the 'classic' books like Mystic Warriors of the Plains by Rev Thomas Mails or other titles from Colin Taylor. For lack of these, you can study the dresses and accoutrements in the film which are very accurate reproductions of the originals.

A common mistake is to refer to the modern pow-wow costumes which are very different in size, material, looks,... from the native clothing worn in the 19th century.

Happy sculpting :)
