Hey Jim and Frank,

Thanks for the comments. I hope to have a few better pictures soon.

Frank, I used to paint all my tartans in oils and I painted the last couple in acrylics. I tried to paint this one in oil's but for some unknown reason I could not paint a straight line for the life of me! I took out the acrylics and then tried them and no joke I painted the whole thing in about 35 minutes and did not have to do any touch ups! :) I hope this helps.

Joe,

After the last rebellion, lots of things Scottish were officially "repressed" by the govt. in London. (read "outlawed") Not until Victorian times were the tartans allowed (military units were allowed certain govt. patterns) and by that time, many of the original patterns were lost. They made up new ones based in fact and fiction.

Additionally, chemical dyes were replacing the vegetable dyes used in the 1700's, so this would further alter the apperance.

A cool subject! I am by no means an expert. I do enjoy painting a good kilt or trews now and again!

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the insight. I have a tartan that I am doing on this figure, forgive me I know the name but the spelling would get me in trouble! I will post it later. :) I too love to see a good tartan or pair of trews!

Joe
