The First US Bombs Fall On Germany...!

On January 27, 1943, 55 US-American "B-24" bombers...

...of the 369th and 306th US bomber squadrons launched an attack on the German city of Wilhelmshaven in broad daylight...:

Your destination are the Kriegsmarine facilities in and around the city's harbor and the sea locks...;:

The damages in the heavily flak-defended city...

... remain low...:

Due to the many bunkers that exist in the city, nobody dies!

City residents, especially children, collect fragments of bombs as "souvenirs"...:

... or proudly be photographed next to duds...:

Something else is more important:

It is the first attack on German territory; the US-Americans have agreed a common strategy with the British, the so-called "Combined Bomber Offensive"!

From now on, the British will target a different German city by night and the Americans by day until the end of the war - Wilhelmshaven will also target more than a dozen times!

The fury of war and the horror that the Nazis brought to the world returns to Germany on January 27, 1943.

On the last day of the war there will be practically nothing left of Wilhelmshaven...:

The beginning of the end......
Any idea of the identity of the heavy cruiser belly down in the last pic Martin?

Phil

It's the light cruiser "Köln"!

On March 30, 1945, the fate of the cruiser was sealed in Wilhelmshaven: The ship, which had been badly hit and damaged by Allied bombs...

... was grounded in the Bauhafen, now the Arsenalhafen, but continued to be used as an artillery platform:

Two towers fired until the last minute against the Allied troops advancing to the south...

... who took Wilhelmshaven on May 6, 1945.

Cheers

Thanks Martin - I knew you would have the answer! I think it was British troops who captured Wilhelmshaven. My late father was in that area with XII Corps, ending hostilities in Kiel.
