Does anybody know a good art shop in London and a shop storing jo sonja's acrylics (preferably in the center)?

Thanks and best regards,

Alessandro

Alessandro, given the exchange rate and the better prices from Internet retailers I really think you'd be better off buying online, especially if you're planning on getting a fair number of tubes. But if you're just buying a couple to try them out then it will probably work out cheaper to buy in person but unfortunately I don't think there are any stockists in London. I've only seen them for sale once in the UK, in Gloucestershire.

Cowling and Wilcox Ltd +44 2077 349 556 United Kingdom London
Fielders 020 8946 5044 United Kingdom London London,
Jacksons Art Supplies +44 1482 632 099 United Kingdom London
Listed as stockists of Sonja I dunno how good any of them are though
They're Chroma stockists, but not of the Jo Sonjas specifically - A2 and Atelier Interactives are the two lines listed.

Thank you very much Helm and Einion, I actually just want to get a few to try them and for that reason I would prefer to have a look in a store. How about online stores in the UK, in any event, have you got any suggestions? If I do not find a store I can have them delivered in London to save the costs for shipping abroad.

Hi Alessandro, I get all my Jo Sonjas from Rainbow Silks http://www.rainbowsilks.co.uk/ProductDetails.cfm?SubCatId=201&Code=JSA1 They have a good level of stock and their customer service is first rate, they have always been quick to despatch, have replaced a tube (the next day) that was received split in transit and have back ordered out of stock colours very quickly.

I purchased a couple of tubes to try and loved them so much I now have nearly the whole range!

Good luck

Alex.

That's handy! The prices in Rainbow Silk are much better than at the other supplier I know so they seem to be the ones to go for, especially if you're getting any Series 3 paints (the cadmiums, Dioxide Purple and Transparent Magenta) where there's a £0.77 advantage currently.

Pardon me for trying to help
What's with the rolleyes dude? It was an honest mistake but needed to be pointed out, no harm no foul.

Thanks a lot everybody, I will go for Rainbow Silk for the paint! So I take it that there are no brick and mortar fine art shops in London worth visiting? I am also interested in other products that might be cheaper in the UK.

Thanks again,

Alessandro

Fair bit of choice in terms of brick-and-mortar places in London, depending on what you're particularly interested in.

General shops: Cowling & Wilcox that Helm mentioned above and Cass Art. Cass Art have a few outlets now, not just the one behind the National Portrait Gallery that most tourists have walked past :)

Larger, wider selection: London Graphic Centre and Atlantis, both are known for their huge stock of Golden paints and mediums. They are definitely worth a visit I think but neither is particularly good value IME, I've rarely bought from them except to get something unavailable anywhere else (e.g. Tri-Art acrylics, which I'd otherwise have had to order from the US or Canada).

Old-school: L. Cornelissen & Son and Green & Stone. Not sure if both still do their own Kolinsky rounds but if so I'd recommend trying them; my favourites were the ones from Green & Stone.

Green & Stone are in Chelsea and Atlantis is near Brick Lane, all the others are easily walked to from Trafalgar Square or Piccadilly.

I use them if I want a dead flat finish. They are tube paint, thus they're thick, but a little flow enhancer works well. They Paine's grey is a fantastic color, as is the "earth" colors. I also use "caseins" for large capes, horses, etc. Here is a link for them: http://www.dickblick.com/products/shiva-casein-colors/ these paints will destroy sables, use synthetics , but they can be buffed once dry to a excellent satin finish. I used them on a 120mm bomber jacket with great success.

Thanks Einion, thanks Tony.
On a related matter, I checked a couple of websites and how come WN series 7 are so much expensive in the UK than in Italy and in Germany??? (8 pounds versus 7 euros...). I thought WN was English and hoped that they would be cheaper in the UK...

They're overpriced anyway given then shoddy QC! And it's not like this is a recent thing either, they've had ample time - like more than a decade - to address the issue.

There are quite a number of brushes at least as good if not better than the Series 7s for less money.

W&N are an English firm but they're owned by a multi-national (ColArt), I really have no idea how they structure their prices for the different brands they control but W&N's reputation does mean there's some premium attached to their stuff.

I pay at least 10 euros for a W&n Series 7 miniature 000 brush in my usual shop... Now, who has reason to complain? :D
