The Shame of Gijon
On June 25, 1982, the teams from the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria faced each other in the preliminary round of the soccer World Cup in Spain.
After the Federal Republic team took the lead through an early goal by Horst Hrubesch...
... and both teams have qualified for the second final round with this result, they conclude a tacit "non-aggression pact".
The game is completed without any serious attacking effort from either side.
The victim of this manipulation is - despite two victories in the preliminary round, including against Germany - the Algerian team, whose last preliminary round match had already taken place the day before and whose final result was known to both the Germans and the Austrians.
The game went down in football history as the "Shame of Gijon".
As a consequence of the behavior of the two teams, the last two preliminary round games in a group in major tournaments have been played at the same time since then.
