Kamikaze bust......is a bust!

Well, I had to strip the paint from my kamikaze bust last night | .
I had painted on a masking solution to protect the face while I painted the fur lining of the leather flying cap. When I lifted it off it pulled up a bunch of little paint chips with it. I tried to repair it but every chip showed up like he had a bad skin condition . Even tried to level them out with some light sanding with 0000 steel wool. But no luck. So I dunked him and will have to start over. For now I may just concentrate on my Adolph Galland bust until it's finished.

That sucks
It was a really wellpainted face! Forget about how good it looked before and just clear it from your head. Otherwise, if you try to focus on what it did look like, you'll never get it and drive yourself nuts!

Hi,

Next time, use TEFLON tape ( used by plumbers to seal pipes and taps threads ) to protect and mask painted areas of your figure.

Teflon tape is cheap, very flexible and fits small gaps and angles.

Try it. It works well even over oil paintings ( already dry of course )!!!

Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice. Funny thing is...I did the same thing with my Von Blucher bust with no problems. Only difference I can think of is I ran the Blucher under warn/hot water before I began peeling the mask off of it.
I'll have to remember that!
The teflon tape sounds like a great idea Arthur. I'm not sure it would have worked on this piece due to the area that needing masking though.
But you've got me thinking...don't they make a brush on version of that stuff? Even if it's the same thing as what I'm using now, it's going to be tons cheaper .
I'm going to look into that. I'll even experiment and try to let you know the results.

I asked a qiestion along this line a while back when I was wondering how to keep armor from being primed with the sprayon primer I use. I forgot who told me about this stuff but I went to my local Hobby Lobby where they had 2 choices of what I was looking for. The one I bought was Susan Scheewe Blue Masking Fluid. You just brush it on & then it lifts off with a fingernail or soft eraser. I haven't tried it yet because my painting season is almost done but the one who recommended it swore by it. HTH.

Another product that works great and has basically no chance of lifting paint is parafilm. It is commonly sold in hobby shops and is very easy to use. You just stretch it and lay it over the area you need covered and fine tune the edge to wherever you want it. I take it the teflon idea is similar; I'll have to try that.

Craig, Sorry to hear about your bust. We've all had the same thing happen at some point. Heck, I'm a pro at stripping a paintjob (victim of perfection). Well I have no doubt you'll do a great job when you do it again.~Gary
