Hello all,

Below are two pics of Kato Kiyomasa. The first is Pegaso's by Victor
Konnov. The econd one is Ray Lamb's still available through Bonapartes.

I can't make up my mind which one to buy.

Is there someone who can tell me about the their quality? Has someone painted them? Or reviewed them?

Cheers,

Paul

Hallo Paul,
I only made the PM kit some 30 years ago and IMO it is still one of the best representations of Katô Kiyomasa although a little stilted. Casting is perfect as expected from Ray Lamb and historically correct. The Pegaso kit has never been on my to do list, so I can't comment on it, but I have some doubts about the accuracy of the Pegaso helmet.
Success,
Piet

The first one, good quality. I painted two 90 mm modeled by Konnov and comercialicated by Pegaso, and great cast in white metal. This one was a candidat the last time to be painted. The assembly is complicated cause there are a lot of pieces, but the fits are goods and few burr in my kits. I can't help you with the second.

Thanks to both of you.

@Piet: i already suspected accuracy issues. What is the helmet (which i rather like for some reason unclear to me) called? Is it made entirely out of metal?

Cheers Paul

Hi Paul,

The helmet of Mr Katô is called a kawari kabuto, the exact type is a 'nagaeboshinarikabuto', literal 'a helmet resembling a tall court cap', quite a mouthful really! The helmet was of steel, including the neckguard and 'wings' or fukigaeshi. The superstructure was made from lacquered paper on a reed construction, as this part was only decorative. There exist in Japanese musea different versions of Katô's favorite type of helm, black with a golden ring, silver lacquered with a red sun etc. Beware, Japanese history is very contagious once you dip into it!

Thanks again. Yes it is contagious. My interest lies mainly with ancients, medieval and 16th - 17th century. It might sound a bit silly but until now I did not realize that Japan has a past going back many centuries and therefore interesting painting subjects, like Mr Katô.

I have to say that Japanese armours appear a bit outlandish/exotic at first sight. I had to get used to it.

With ancient, medieval and 16th - 17th subjects putting a date to an image is very easy for me. I cannot do this however with Japanese subjects. Thi is still very hard for me.

They both are nice kits. But the PM one has perfect casting from Ray Lamb.
The PM one is based on a woodblock print.

I also have a rare white metal and resin kit in 80mm of Kato Kiyomasa fighting a tiger in Korea.
