Khaki color in oil?? What compination?

Hello fellow PF members,

I'm working on Soldiers Model No. SO-18 BERSAGLIERI, SPECIAL CORP IN AFRICA, 1889.
The instruction indicate for the uniform khaki. The picture shows a color really close to sand. I'm trying to create this mix but without any success so far.
I was thinking to mix white, yellow ochre and a bit of brown (raw umber?).
If you have any good suggestions, i'm more than keen to listen to them

Naples yellow and sepia has been my starting point lately.

You can get a pretty broad range of greens with Cad yellow and WN Blue (green shade). You can vary the amounts of yellow and blue depending on the shade of green you want.

This mix dries dead flat too.

Although beginning with white and Yellow Ochre is a good start Raw Umber is probably not quite the right colour to use here, try Burnt Umber instead. If you don't have this you could just add in small amounts of red and black, Cadmium Red Light and Mars Black if you have them.

Thanks a lot for the fast replies guys. Einion i was thinking to use burnt umber to be honest. I will give it a try. Keith, the color that i try to make is like desert sand, not the green khaki.

If you undrcoat with Humbrol 72 your half way there as its a faded khaki colour
I did a figure some time ago where i painted a figure with a mix of Humbrol 72 enamel and added raw umber oil paint for shading and added white oil paint for the highlights.Worked a treat but because your mixing enamels and oil paints together you've just got to blend a bit quicker.

Oh, okay...

Unbleached titanium+yellow ochre+tit white+burnt umber for base...

I used this on the Brit Naval Officer helmet and leggings that are in the my bench. Undercoated with And Ochre + Val Engl Uniform. Too complicated ? :lol:

Good. Some people don't like to use more than 2 or 3 color combo's in a mix so I wasnt't sure...

You can highlight by adding more tit white to the mix. I overhighligted with the the wet on dry and had to fix. The shade is straight burnt umber. That did not work so well for the deepest shades though.
