From Mirico..a fantasy maker from Singapore...Rico is great guy ...and formthose on the west coast of NA deliveries are amazingly fast..three days to my door from ordering...

There is a bit of cut and paste associated with this piece..but tried to take advantage of the surgery and pose the head as a feature with the guy leaning back as tho he’s just lopped off the head and is presenting the results..

Next to prime and then apply the lessons learned from kagemusha in trans oils....

The fun of fantasy is the open imagination...is he the Ur Aryan w blonde hair, or grey..is the severed head green? That will decide primers..I get better greens over a white prime, and might use a mahogany on the guy..then scrub coats..I also need think about the colours that will be used through the whole thing even in tiny measures to keep it looking like one piece and not parts stuck together ..I get my fun is this sort of thought process vs trying to match a specific uniform colour..figuring out a storyline

My nit re the sculpt...I am thinking the severed ogre head wouldn’t have closed clenched mouth? But of course with fantasy subjects it’s a reality rivet that’s not critical so long as the overall sculpt works...which for me it does

Scrub coat of transparent yellow lake, transparent red oxide..the yellow should give depth to green I plan to use on the severed ogre head..the red a sunburned base..will sort the hair, leather, metal bits as I go..I don’t mind getting things spread a bit outside the lines somto speak..tends to help bring a piece together ..the pain is waiting for things to dry, matte out..

I use stiffer oil brushes to get the stuff on..and found long hog bristles better than short as the ferrules can scratch things if bristles too short..then assorted make up sponges, and make up brushes..at times a soft fan brush is useful..from bitter experience I use one bunch of brushes and pads per each colour mix I am playing with. And once cleaned I leave brushes for a day

Thats looking very good; Scrub coat, what is that ?, would i be right in assuming with oils, you paint on the colour and then literally scrub the paint off again?

Steve, check kagamushas sbs for the proper explanation as he’s my mentor in this technique, but yes, it’s oils..after priming with citadel, or as I am trying here MrSurfacer, give it a day, then lay on a rough coat of a transparent colour or mix that tones to where you want the blocked in colour to be..work in manageable chunks so it can set for a bit..then come back and scrub some off, move some out of crevices..I also take a bit of cotton t shirt and gently touch heard and there to lighten more..the process gives a depth to following highlights, shadows..detail that’s fun to play with and brings out something in oils that’s hard to achieve with acrylics..that depth of colour. It also means I am learning to think of my paints as more than colours, pigments, but thinking of transparent, opaque, fast, slow drying..
The surface thus achieved can be used as base for anything..acryl, metallics..I don’t use acrylic or enamel for base colour anymore..just oils..then whatever seems right thereafter..
Am still on training wheels and my art background is furniture design and concept art..I can’t draw worth beans ..but am enjoying the journey and next will drag out the dreaded airbrush ..
An aside..I don’t thin oil or use additive mediums...so I find slightly stiffer brushes from the usual watercolour work for me..the goal is t to load the body of a brush with paint but to move the stuff around with control..
Am also playing with flats..via Brian Keywood using this technique.

I really like what I'm seeing so far - looking forward to seeing more!
After I get done the mounted samurai I'm in the middle of, I'm going to paint two busts from El Greco (their classic Spartan and Laconian Hoplites), entirely in oils (and there will be an SBS posting too), so I'll definitely be following your progress on this!

Bit more hair ...all very much sketching at this point...

as well, I find a mixed pigment Color or mixed colours when left to sit on the palette, actually seem to dry with different rates for each pigment...so poking a dry brush into semi dried stuff and dry brushing about can create bit more depth..

I've been thinking about picking up those same printer's inks from El Greco...Are they a specific brand or are they generic made for El Greco?

I am sure they are made by someone..guessing Sennelier...but EG repackages from big vats..well,some large size...I’ve thought to ask the maker, but then figured that would be cheating ...so I bought from them and shall continue to...are they superior to acrylic metallics, or molotow sticks? Probably not..but I just like mixing them with oil colours and getting interesting effects
