Just want to start by wishing all my fellow planeteers a happy and prosperous new year
The subject of The battle of Waterloo and the 100 day campaign has always held a fascination for me right from a young lad through to adulthood and being the 200th anniversary this year I wanted to focus on doing some waterloo subjects.
I've visited the battlefield many times now and visited most of the major sites, however its always been the final defeat of the Imperial Guard that's interested me,how a superior force like the Guard could just collapse at the most critical time in the battle.
Since my historex modelling days I've always wanted to try and replicate this critical moment in time, however I just never got round to it until now.
As some of you will know I do paint a lot of busts and I decided a few months ago to create a scene depicting part of the Guards retreat /rout during the final hours of this climatic struggle.
I chose on a 6 part busterama which will involve 6 busts all sculpted by the talented Carl reid, the main focal point of the scene will be the defence of the Imperial colour and for this the obvious choice was going to be Graham Scollicks - Imp Guard Eagle Bearer (CGS),the only alteration to this bust was going to be the knapsack,i removed the rolled greatcoat from the top as the bust is already depicted wearing the greatcoat, after removal I added magic sculpt to the area to reinstate the material of the knap sack.i just need to add the loops which would have held the greatcoat in place, the busts left hand will be added at a later date.
For the 2nd bust I was going to use Carl's Heavy Dragoon (SK miniatures)
For this I was going to keep the head but remove bicorne and replace this with some spares which I acquired from Graham at CGS,most of the original uniform details were removed with a sanding disc and replaced with magic sculp to replicate the greatcoat details, this is my first major venture into conversion work so I hope you'll bear with me,i had to work in various sessions because I didn't want to damage any areas I had previously sculpted, again the knapsack (CGS) had the greatcoat removed and details replaced with magic sculp.
I then added crossbelts and knapsack straps plus the epaulettes which were also sculpted from magic sculp.
I also added a cartridge box to the right hip area.i plan to add the insignia from historex spare parts,i also added a moustache and hair followed by the ponytail at the back.
Buttons were added from magic sculp as well.
The musket has a lot more to be added before its completed, but I added it for the purpose of these photos, the musket again is from Graham (CGS) from his french dragoon bust, the musket is virtually the same as a Guard musket except the Guard musket only has one stock ring so I removed the original one by sanding it down and smoothing it out.
I kept the dragoons orginal right hand and removed the left one,i kept the heavy dragoons left hand and adapted it to hold the musket
Tor the 3rd bust I chose Carl's 26th Continental Army bust (Frank miniatures),I really liked the threating pose on this and I decided to convert this exactly the same way as I did with bust 2,the bust still has quite a lot to be done but as I said I need drying times between sessions as I'm not a prolific sculptor.
Again I kept the dragoons right hand and kept the continentals left hand adapted to hold the musket.
I would like to thank Graham at CGS for all his help and to my friend Gary Higgins who inspired me to try some conversion work.
Also thanks to Carl for his increadible talent for turning out these masterpieces.
