The first bust is sure to be a topic of discussion. Link. There is a monument to one Willis Howlett, a 13 year old {ahem} "faithful servant" of 15 year old William Howlett, who died while in service to his owner, a member of Harvey's Scouts. All contemporaneous account reveal it was illegal for a black man, free or freed, to join the confederate army until 3 weeks before the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.

Then again, there are a lot of things that were and are illegal both then and now. That alone doesn't prevent people from doing them. Were there armd "Black Confederates" during the war? I'm sure there were. IMO their numbers were not in the several thousand like some claim.
