I bought this from El Greco in a moment of madness and am I glad I did!

Yep, it is another 1/16, becoming a bit of a fan to be honest. I have never even attempted a tartan before so that will be fun!!!

Got the acrylics done to base the face and drop the eyes in so I need to let this fully dry before slapping some oils on him. He is a stern looking chap so I had better get him right......

But, as I have just washed my brush out in my cup of tea, I think a break is called for.... and a fresh cup of tea...

Managed to get underway on the face this morning using W&N water soluble oils and the hairy parts are blocked in. Will progress onto doing the base colours of the armour and clothing prior to fitting the two braided sections of hair which will undoubtedly get in the way. Then there is the tartan......... Kev (Nap) told me to get tartan paint but damned if I can find any!!!

That has got him all blocked in ready for the fun to start.

What are the feelings on the box art ‘war paint’? Is this for real or is it a ‘Braveheart’ hangover?

On closer examination of the box art tartan, I see that it isn’t actually tartan as I know it. It is basically three coloured stripes running horizontal to the ground then divided by a chequerboard pattern in lines. Not sure how ‘wrong’ this is but it will be easier to paint and, with some carefully placed, shading could look like a tartan at a distance. This is going to be interesting to achieve to say the least......

This is the box art showing what I mean.

The face looks your best yet. May I be so bold as to hazard the suggestion that speed is not always good and that little details can be missed if you rush. Not a critisism, just an observation.

Many thanks Ken. You are right but I don’t really go for speed, I am just lucky enough to spend many hours a day doing this. Honestly, if I did it slower, it would be no better. Issues with freehand for example is that I do have shaky hands. Not too bad but makes fine line work almost impossible. Trust me I am as layed back and chilled as it comes with my painting and not rushing it :)

Really appreciate your input Ken (y)

Hi Graham

That's right blame me because they sold out of tartan paint...........

This is a nice sculpt and I agree the face is one if not the best ....

Following with interest

I know what you mean. I have just purchased one of these https://www.pk-pro.de/Miniature-Holders-Grips-V3 to help my shaky hands. I haven't used it yet, but others have said they are excellent.

A videos of them are here

and here

Hi Guys

Those holders are also available from Broken Toad as well

Looks useful

Thanks Kev, you have cost me a fortune (well, a bit of money anyway) this morning. Ordered one of these clamps from Broaken Toad and a couple of the busts you suggested from Historex

Happily, this one is now finished and will be in the Completed forum very soon :)
