Hi guys ,
I was pleased to receive from Ulrich at Puchala Miniatures the next 2 releases in their WW1 bust range the first Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, or to his friends Paul von Hindenburg !!

Born on the 2 October 1847 and died on the 2 August 1934 he was a Germanfield marshal, statesman, and politician, and served as the second President of Germany from 1925 to 1934.

Hindenburg enjoyed a long career in the Prussian Army, retiring in 1911. He was recalled at the outbreak of World War I, and first came to national attention, at the age of 66, as the victor at Tannenberg in 1914. As Germany's Chief of the General Staff from 1916, he and his deputy, Erich Ludendorff, rose in the German public's esteem until Hindenburg came to eclipse the Kaiser himself. Hindenburg retired again in 1919, but returned to public life one more time in 1925 to be elected as the second President of Germany.
Though 84 years old and in poor health, Hindenburg was persuaded to run for re-election in 1932, as he was considered the only candidate who could defeat Adolf Hitler. Hindenburg was re-elected in a runoff but nonetheless played an important role in the Nazi Party's rise to power, dissolving parliament twice in 1932 and eventually appointing Hitler as Chancellor in January 1933. In February, he issued the Reichstag Fire Decree which suspended various civil liberties, and in March he signed the Enabling Act, in which parliament gave Hitler's administration legislative powers. Hindenburg died the following year, after which Hitler declared the office of President vacant and, as "Führer und Reichskanzler", made himself head of state.

Here is a picture of the man himself ...

Moving onto the pieces themselves , looking 1st at the main body :

He is modelled wearing the senior officers red lined paletot , this makes for a very nice contrast to the field gray of the uniform colour and provides for a very striking model .

Detailing is very good and not overstated with the decorations he wears , , nice folds in the way the paletot folds back to reveal his tunic , around his neck is a strap for supporting the binoculars he carrys.

Careful painting will bring out all the details so finely done by Ulrich .

There is a small amount of casting flash to remove from the base at the rear ..but a couple of minutes with the wet and dry will deal with this so no worrys there .

Hindeburg

Lets have a look at the other pieces in the model ;

The base is in keeping with the rest of the range in the form of an iron cross , casting is as with the others nicely done and locates securely in a hole in the underneath of the torso.

Moving onto the binoculars , these are nicely done with a small amount of flash to remove from the top , most modellers will probably reference the bino's more closley and detail accordingly , they are designed to locate in a hole in the chest and once in position look the part

Finally the head itself and to be honest I love the facial details especially the moustache , he is wearing the picklehaube which has a cover on it underneath the actual cap detaisl/outlines are seen so well done for this .

One thing I would like to have see is an option of a bareheaded version as Hindenburg has such a distinctive hairstyle , which together with his bristling moustache would really look the part or even a version with a soft field cap with the red band which would pick up the red lining of his coat , this is of course my review opinion . (You could of course use the cap from the Crown Prince Rupprech von Bayern ..ref number 0011)

Hindenburg

Finally lets have a look at the full piece , on the dry run all pieces fitted together with no major problems apart from a little prep and will make another fine addition both to your display cabinet and to the range that UP produce .

Conclusion :

This is a good subject in a natural pose , well cast and sculpted , as I said a bareheaded option would be nice Facial details are accurate with good details .

The range has built into a great display and I look forward to more from UP miniaturen .

A good reference start is the Osprey book in the Elite series (No 97) "The Kaisers Warlords" plate E1

Another one I can recommend to all .

Hindenburg can be obtained for 35 euro's plus shipping
