No worries. I was going to use ground pastel on his pants but instead used diluted groundwork colours applied sparingly with a relatively dry brush. Not really dry brushing though. I think the key is not to over apply the paint and to ensure it is diluted enough that some of the original cloth colour still shows through. Also building up the dirt with multiple passes seems to work well.
