I seem to remember this one being done before in the dim & distant, but members have come & gone since so I thought it was worth a repeat.

So to start things off, mine is belts and webbing. No matter what scale, I almost always struggle with them before I'm at a point where I'm happy (or can say "it'll do"). Get them right and they can really enhance a piece. But get them wrong and they can ruin it, even if the rest of the paint-job is top-notch.

There's no getting away from them either, pretty much every figure from every era has at least one.

Got to say gold and silver braiding - I manage usually, but am never entirely happy with the results hence my preference for figures without them:)

(I almost always leave the skin till last Kev, because I like painting it - Bit like saving the best part of a meal till the end)

Hands and (bare) feet. I'm never happy with the result. Even if they are well sculpted I seem to struggle with them

I know what you mean Phil. Not helped by the fact that these are sometimes the weakest part of a sculpt, as if the sculptor just wanted to get finished with the job ASAP.

Painting camouflage patterns - particularly when doing the final lining in of details etc, I always seem to slip with the brush somewhere & have to clean up.
Then when I look at the finished pattern, I'm never completely happy with it so I'll either add a few more dots/stripes, leave it for a day or two & then come back & look again before I'm happy with the completed pattern.

It's a form of masochism, I suppose.......:)

Hands. Without a doubt. Looks like I'm in good company as well. You know, I've chosen figures on the basis their hands are in their pockets! This is a problem as the viewer's eye is immediately drawn to what the hands are doing.
Strangest thing is, if the figure's wearing gloves...no problem. What a weirdo.

For me it’s when heraldry or other freehand is repeated on the same part. The last time I tried to do three lions I couldn’t get them symmetrical and the same size. I had to strip the shield a ton of times.

Kevin, that's probably one of the toughest things to do in modelling. Not necessarily painting a pattern or design, but keeping it uniform if the design repeats can drive you crazy.

I don't know if this counts since it's a little less about painting, but for me, it's doing work on the base of a model. Basing products are just ok, for the most part, and it's really hard to do DIY stuff that looks any good. I have a bust in my backlog. The model itself is great, but I'm also looking forward to not doing anything with the base except a nice wood stain.

That said, I do agree with those who said eyes were the worst part. That's a close second for me.
