Having visited this exhibition at the British Museum I can thoroughly recommend it. It covers an aspects of life in the Legions, including enlisting, ranks, armour, weapons, life in camp/forts, auxiliaries, cavalry, artillery, soldiers in society, domestic life and wives/children etc.
All illustrated with objects borrowed from around the world including the most complete segmented cuirass ever found, a superb surviving scutum, personal items such as shoes, socks and and an actual tunic (not red!) etc.
We were in the exhibition for 2 1/2 hours……but then, of course, you can spend the rest of the day in the rest of the museum itself.
The exhibition is on until 23 June and the entry fee is £22 upwards. Entry is timed and I would recommend you allow plenty of time to queue to get into the museum itself but once in we had no problem entering the actual exhibition itself which wasn’t too crowed.
If you live in the U.K. and have any interest in the Roman Army…..go!

Of course, I had to buy the accompanying book/catalogue! Lavishly illustrated and very readable…….plenty of myths dispelled!

I wish I was closer to London, because it does sound very good. It had a fair amount of attention on BBC Radio 4 a few weeks ago.

I went to the exhibition they had for the Terracotta Army a few years ago. The place really is of the highest standard. Their exhibitions are world class.
