Hi, Guys,

Something here I’ve been working on a while - a 1/6 3D print from Atlas. Atlas has a few in this ‘Roman’ range both in 1/6 and 1/12. The pedestal base is included with the figure, but the decorative ‘SPQR’ base is additional. As you can see I’ve done a marbling effect on the decorative base.

I’ve decorated the shield face with various freehand graphics. Most decorative finishes on these shields are based on those seen in re-enactment groups, but I think only one intact period shield has ever been found, and it had all sorts of random things painted on it. So, my version is less the lightning bolt effect in screen print clarity and more the rough and ready effort that may suit one soldier’s personal whim.

The detail is excellent but as a 3D sculpt it’s all hollow, excepting the shield arm. This tends to make it top heavy. To resolve this, I’ve used a solid resin base (Model Display Products) to anchor everything.

These prints are made to order; mine had a turnaround time of about two weeks for delivery.

Cheers,

Robbo

Brilliant piece Robbo, everything is good but really like the texture on his shirt and the marble effect.

Cheers Simon

Really nicely painted, 1/6th busts are a challenge, texture and fine detail are pre-requisites for tackling something this big. You should be well pleased with this one.

Hi Robbo

That’s a nice piece , like what you’ve done with the shield , the detail looks impressive and in the larger scale definitely a challenge

Thanks for sharing

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Hi Scotty,

The shirt is cast, and so finely so that it allows a lot of minor attention to variations. I think I have 4 different shades of red in oils and acrylic, plus the usual shadows and highlights. I only used my iPad camera so detail not great, but still gives a good overview of the area.

Cheers for looking in!

This is very nicely done throughout. I suspect the only uniformity in the Roman army would have been shield designs between centuries/cohorts or legions. All equipment, being hand made (manus = hand, factum = made), would have been re-issued and re-used.
