Another great piece of sculpting by Carl Gordon,he looks like he means business,the 28th is an iconic regt with its stovepipe shako as well,should prove popular amongst painters this one

Lovely sculpting and very iconic, Carl at his best. Has to be based on our DFG piece though and would be nice if we didn't directly copy each other, but if it sells I suppose, business is hard enough as it is. As said, lovely sculpting though. RHA officer would be good next ? I can forward details

A beautiful piece of sculpting. Sorry for my ignorance but what is 1/9th scale in mm?

Can anyone point me to a list of model scales when comparing the x/yth scale to mm? There are some converters on-line but I can't get them to work when trying ton work out a scale in mm.

Cheers
Chris

Hello Graham
Thanks for taking time to comment on this post.
Having painted quite a few of them, I am well aware of the 100mm scale David Grieve figure depicting a private of the 28th sculpted over 20 years ago . My brief to Carl was to sculpt a Light. Company Sergeant of the 28th in 1/9th scale in the act of reloading which, as far as I am aware, is not marketed by anyone else. With regard to your remark of 'directly copying each other' I don't micro manage sculptors in their work but am delighted with the result from Carl and am more than happy to market it as I see fit.
With regard to your offer of sending details of an RHA figure in order to produce it you're too late, Mitches Military Models already have one on the market in 1/9th scale, Captain Mercer, Waterloo sculpted by Maurice Corry. http://mitchesmilitarymodels.co.uk/?product=200cf-captain-mercer

Hello Chris
There are more knowledgable people on the forum who will no doubt be able to help you more than I can but I have measured this particular model and from the top of his plume to the soles of his feet is 222mm. I estimate that it would be 200mm tall from the top of his head to the soles of his feet.

The easy way of working out scales is to assume that the average male is 180mm (5'11"), although in Napoleonic times 170mm (5'7") would probably be more common. The classic 'toy soldier' scale was 1/32 or 54mm measured from bottom of feet to eye level. Most figures are now measured from bottom of feet to top of head, less headgear.
Roughly speaking:
200mm = 1/9
180mm = 1/10
150mm = 1/12
120mm = 1/15
90mm = 1/20
75mm = 1/24
60mm = 1/30
54mm = 1/32

A lot of scales were based on Imperial measurements (1' = 1 foot ~ 300mm, 1" = 1 inch = 25.2mm; 12 inches = 1 foot) hence
1" : 1' = 1/12
3/4" : 1' = 1/16
1/2" : 1' = 1/24
3/8" : 1' = 1/32
1/4" : 1' = 1/48

Of course, looking at any photograph or painting, it is obvious that people come in all shapes and sizes, all thaat matters when making up a diorama/vignette is that the weapons and kit are all to the same scale. I hope this has answered your question.

Best wishes,

Mike
