Guys I discover the topic today and can only recommend beginners to acquire mars tones (black, yellow, brown, black, caput mortuum). They have outstanding covering power which is the first quality you are expecting from oil paints.

Yup I've heard about mars tones. Unfortunately the're not available in Umton range. But once I get better with oil paint I''ll be on a lookout for them, thank you for your post ;)

Another thing is I'm not sure if I need to buy that cadmium red deep. The medium tone is bit orange and I'm not sure if that's ok or not. Are all these cadmium red medium like this?

Paints labelled as mars colours are made from synthetic iron oxide; the English Red, Indian Red and Yellow Ochre listed may actually be made from versions of these pigments already (PR101, PY42*).

Although it's not as opaque usually Burnt Umber is arguably a little more useful than Mars Brown, but these colours can vary a lot from brand to brand.

*I should mention, not all synthetic iron oxides are opaque - for both of the pigment codes listed the paint could be all the way from very opaque to extremely transparent, or somewhere in between.

So Umtons finally came in. I must say I like oil paint very much! I used one of my old minis to practice on just to get the feel and it was great!
My final question : how to mix brown madder tone? Michal Křepelka uses this tone for flesh shading, but unfortunately Winsor Newton Artist brand cannot be found in this country. It would be very helpful because I want to try this paint.
