Can anyone help, I'm looking for a colour copy, if there is one, of the print shown on page 41 of Osprey MAA 271 The Austrian Army 1740-80 :1 Cavalry.
it shows a Hussar Officer and trumpeter c.1760 by R von Ottenfeld, unfortunately it's in black & white.
An image search hasn't turned it up.

Cheers,
Roger.

Oh now I understand!
You can color the uniform transfer well to the trumpeter, and the trousers are equal to the Hussar Dolman, the fur coat as. The premiums on Kalnoky red, with 2 gold strips.

Cheers

Hi, Roger, I have a copy of the Albertina Handschrift, and can look up the regiment. It was Kalnocky that you wanted to paint?

As the figure shows, the hussar trumpeters wore the "German" coat, instead of the Pelz, over their dolmans, and the tricorne instead of the Kolpak. The coat would have been in the dolman color, with lace matching the dolman lace color. Their uniform was so similar to the Hungarian infantry officers' uniform, that Stadden used to use the same castings for either subject.

Prost!

Well, Roger, I'm afraid I'll only muddy the waters with this bit of info...

First, "Das Heer Maria Theresias", the facsimile of the Albertina-Handschrift, confirms the general details of the troopers' uniforms, but not those of the trumpeters, except to note that they wore the tricorne and coat, as we already knew.

I checked in my copy of Osprey's "The Austrian Army 1740-80: 1 Cavalry". In a note informing us that "some gaudily colored coats are recorded", the authors note specifically that Kalnocky's trumpeters wore a light yellow coat with silver lace. The SYW Project's (Kronoskaf's) article cites Knoetel for its info on the musicians, and list the color as scarlet with blue cuffs and silver lace and edging.

I don't know for sure, from these two different descriptions, but I suspect that either one could be correct, but may have been used at different times. Red/scarlet and yellow/gold were the colors used on the Saebeltasche, and it makes me wonder if those were the colors of Count Kalnocky's livery.

Do you have 2 of those figures? You could paint both variations then ;D

Prost!

Thanks Brad, it was all the conflicting info that made me decide to base the figure on that particular Ottenfeld print in my original post. I think I will choose one of the sources and go with it. I don't want it to join the pile of unpainted figures.

Roger.

I just tried googling "ottenfeld" and "ottenfeld hussar" myself, and I see the problem. There are a lot of images that come back, including color versions of some of the Ottenfeld prints that Osprey used, but not that particular one, not for several pages or results, at least.

On the other hand, not a total loss, I saw several good reference materials on the Austrian army in the SYW that I'll eventually have to add to my library. Also, I noticed some links to Uniformology, whose brochures I'd forgotten. This particular book might contain the very print we're looking for:

One more source that I thought of is the Historical Image Service ("Historisce Bilderdienst"). I first looked them up, when I was looking for more info on Brunswick-Wolfenbuettel. They have a file available of Ottenfeld prints, at this link:

http://www.historischer-bilderdienst.de/fts.php?criteria=ottenfeld&x=12&y=6

As far as I know, you buy a file containing the images. I concede, though, that I haven't bought anything from them yet.

I'm going to keep looking, for my own curiosity! ;)

Prost!

Cheers Brad, t's not a simple one is it?
I'm loathe to buy the uniformolgy ones as I've probably got the majority of them already.
I never thought of "Historisce Bilderdienst", I've bought CDROM's from them before and have been pleased with what I've got, I might give them a try.
