surgical or dental; whatever they are called - i did a search and came up null.

i want something better than optivisor or tamiya.

any recommendation?

about "3x" would be good; currents (above) are 2.5x so i might like to go a little stronger.

thanks

Hi s.e Charles

I own both an Optivisor with a X2.5 lens (which I use for miniatures), and a surgical loupe with a X2.5 lens (which I use at my work). My experience is they are NOT interchangeable! Each has it's own length of field and the second one was custom made specifically for me by Designs for Vision, as usual for surgical loupes. Naturally, it is much much more expensive. So in what sense your desired loupes need to be "better" than Tamiya's or Optivisor? Optivisor loupes can be fitted with larger magnification lenses, in case X2.5 is not enough for your needs...
I am very happy with my X2.5 Optivisor, but will be happy to try to share more of my experience and insights if needed

Best,

Benny

thanks for the inputs and perspectives, All.

a couple of weeks ago i had ordered a loupe from amazon (Amazon.com: Ymarda Optics 3.0X Binocular Loupes Surgical Loupes (Black Frame 3.0X Magnifier with Different Working Distances) (L (440-540mm) with Black Frame) : Industrial & Scientific) but when they came it was obvious the working length was going to exceed my arm's same, so back they went.

i checked with my dental hygienist and she gave me the name & number of the company which furnished hers. calling them, it became apparent unless i was going to use them professionally it would not be a practical investment (starting at $1,200 US and heading upwards with any modification). but after explaining my conundrum, the lady suggested an optometrist making some higher powered readers, so that's the route i'm on now.

i had some prescription graduated lenses which i never could get used to, so i called Eyebobs and asked if they could swap lenses in the same frame. so for under $60.00, i'll have a pair of 3x magnifiers.

we'll see how those work before diving into a more sophisticated solution which my not be necessary.

thanks again for the feedback.

so in the tradition of buying myself a hobby gift for the season, i have a new OptiVISOR DA-7 2.75x (yes, proprietary brand!) on its way to me.

i will surely not be waiting until december 25th to open!

thanks to all for the inputs & advice.

Www.vseyewear.com has clip on to your glasses, magnifiers up to 5X that flip up. They offer a 25% discount right now for Xmas. Amazon in the US offers the 4X version. If you don’t normally wear corrective lenses the optometrist, or optician could make something. You could try over the counter readers and add clip ons to them. Some fly fishing stores can have something that may work for you. That is where I first found clip ons like the vswear. Be aware the greater the magnification the closer you have to work except if you buy surgical types which are actually telescopes. Designs for Vision, and other companies for surgeons, etc. set the distance you desire.
