Since I all but gave up on 1/35 scale armor and am getting into figs, Nepoleonic and Medeival Knights. can you recommend some books, and what is the best mag. out there???

Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,

For one thing, being that you're in New Jersey, you should come up to one of the NJMFCA meetings. The next one is in a couple of weeks at my house in West Caldwell. You'd be welcome.

As for books, if you need reference materials the list is endless-Osprey books are pretty good. There is however a big, full color book on Napoleon's Elite Cavalry that contains Rousellot plates and is excellent (albeit pricey at $80).

For painting/modelling-the Osprey (formerly Windrow and Greene) Mastercallses are great. Bill Horan's version, Bill Otinnger's version all top notch. And of course Shep Paine's book on figures is still one of the best out there.

If you're interested in coming to a meeting, we can show you all of them and some other great titles.

Lou

And if you show up at one of the big three figure shows this year: MFCA, World Expo, or Long Island, bring plenty of cash. The books you cannot live without will appear before your very eyes!!

Thanks guys, When are the shows, I know there a few in the spring. The only one I am definate about is the NJHMA show in Somerset.
I do have a few fig painting books though I am not as good as I'd like to be, I am going to try oils on the next fig I do.

Lou are the meetings on the weekend? I am in North Haledon.

North Haledon? You're right around the corner.

No weekends, we have them on Tuesday or Wednesday nights (there's only a few of us and frankly I haven't gone in a while-they used to be down the shore). They're good though because the guys bring stuff that they work on, we hang out, talk shop, etc. You're welcome to join us next time (this month was cancelled), I think it'll be 3rd or 4th week in Feb.

NJHMA is a decent show, but not what it used to be. We must have met, because your name sounds so familar and I usually go every year. Did you used to go to the NJHMA meetings in Wayne?

Hi Tony

I think Figurines is the best magazine out there. It's in French, but the photos are superb. Historical Miniatures, Figure International and some others are other figure-centric mags.

And usually, you can't go wrong with the occasional Osprey book. Books by Rousselot, Dempsey, Haythornthwaite and Elting cover the Napoleonic period fairly well. Some are available at a decent price, and others are very expensive. I find the local Borders has a good selection of Osprey titles and other books that are worth browsing. For some reason, the Barnes and Noble selection is never as good.

And there is a series of reenactor photo books by Europa Militaria that are worth a look. Although recreated uniforms are never the same as the originals, there is a lot to be learned from the photos in those books. Of course you don't get too many reenactors with filthy campaign worn outfits!!

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy, Yeah I was checking out Squadron's selection of mags. They all look good to me.

Lou, I was saying, I have never been to a NJHMA show, I hope to go this year. I have been to the LI show 2 years back, incredible work there.
I am a member of AMPS and go to all the NJIPMS shows perhaps you know me from one of these? I try to get to MD for the AMPS Nat's if I can in the spring.
Now I want to get away from the armor and concentrate on figs. Napoleonic and Medeival KNights as I have said so I am intersted in any shows in this area. I think sometimes these shows are kept secret, never hear about them.

Thanks Tony

Tony, since you mentioned AMPS, have I met you at the AMPS meetings at Maplewood Hobby? I haven't been to their meetings in a few months, but I attended through last summer.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Hi Pat, Steve,
Pat, where is the MFCA show, and isn't there a few in the spring. I don't know much about them at all. Except the NJ show in a few months.

Steve, No I have never been to one of the meetings, don't work with my sched. I do attend East and the Nat's when I can, I have for about the last 4-5 years or so.
I did an article in Boresite about a year and a half ago, maybe you saw my name there. Like I said I am getting out of tracks, if anything I will do a few softskins from time to time, I am not really interested in WW2 figs at all, I love the old stuff.

Regards Tony

Tony,

The Long Island show (In November) is in Freeport, Long Island (about an hour from northern NJ).
MFCA is in Valley Forge, PA across from the battlefield at the convention center in May (Pat gave the dates above).
There is an Atlanta show in February just outside of Atlanta-great show if you can go
Of course NJHMA is in Somerset in April (?)

Other than that I don't know of any other spring shows or even "local" shows for figures only.

Tony, I know what you mean about trying to attend meetings. It's difficult to do during the work week, especially when you have to deal with NJ traffic! When I was a member of IPMS Dayton things worked out great...they meet on a Sunday evening!

Hi Steve, Yes indeed, I work early AM so weeknights are out for me, I used to go to the NJIPMS meetings but I have quite a few hobbies and there is only so much time in a life ya know.

Tony
