Hey guys,

I just got my copy of mike blank's new book and i'm itching to get started sculpting (still gotta get some tools and putties) but i was also wondering how you all go about getting the mannequin..i know some use commercial ones, others use wire, and i noticed bill chilstrom uses the upper torso and the crotch...is there anywhere to get my hands on those kind of parts ?

I made make my own by taking a bad figure and cutting it down to parts that resemble the mannequins that Blank and others use. I also reduce the overall size of each part using a Dremel tool so that I can add putty to them and NOT get a figure that is 60 or 65mm.

I have a stock of torsos and hips built up over the months from extra putty that didn't get used in whatever I was working on. Since this putty would otherwise go to waste they're practically free :) You can also size them differently to vary the stature of the guy you'll be building in a way you can't with commercial one-size-fits-all mannequins (not that there's anything wrong with them).
