Great start Brian & liking olive tones.
I tend to use Raw Sienna as base tone, with Raw Umber shadows.
Recommend checking art of Charles F. Goldie & Gottfried Lindauer both renown artists of contemporary Māori from late 19th & early 20th Cent.
Examples attached mate.
Trust this helps & am sure as surrounding colours with ta Moko it will just evolve together.

Thanks Mike - I'll try some greeny-brown (I usually use Raw Umber) in the shadows next.

Thanks for the references as well - they'll come in handy. Quite the variety of tones from one individual to the next - a challenge for sure.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi Brian
I recently purchased this bust again, having painted it many years ago.

I can only commend you for your work so far and encourage you to be bold and brave as you tackle the painting of ta moko.

I suggest you do plenty of research. As Mike said, the Lindauer paintings are an excellent source of reference. Good luck. I’ll be following your progress with great interest.

Back in 2018 I had the privilege of visiting the Auckland Art Museum with Mike Bulter to view the Lindauer Maori portraits in person. I was so deeply moved by the impact of these paintings I bought this book for future reference. If you see any images you like, send me a PM and I can send you enlarged photos of ta moko to assist you with accuracy.

Thanks Tony - much appreciated. At this stage I was mostly concerned with the overall flesh tone before moving on to other stages of the project but it's gratifying to hear from you and others that I seem to be generally on the right track.

I might tap your experience with this bust and your kind offer of images from the Lindauer book as I get closer to the ta moko stage of the project. The old thread on this project here on pF has been a gold mine of insight and info!

Thanks again for the advice,
Cheers,
Brian

A very special time I remember fondly Tony.
My copy sits on book shelf as reminder of the visit & seeing the real Lindauer’s up close together.
Trust you & your family are well as our weird world keeps spinning.

That green seems to be doing the trick. I saw an article awhile back about starting with green. Not being traditionally trained, other than from me Mum, it's a difficult concept to wrap the 'ol cabesa round, if ya know what I mean. The matt hair line brings it all into focus. Looks great, Brian.

Hi Brian

Cracking up date on the flesh , really enjoying this

Interesting you've not done the eyes yet

So tempted by this piece

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Thanks Nap - white knuckle fun trying to get a flesh tone that feels satisfactory - getting great advice from pF members with greater experience than I. I'm taking a mental break from the flesh for a bit to work on other bits; I know I'll be returning to tweak/mess up/tweak/etc. the flesh as I go.

As the attached photo shows, I started on the basic eyes in acrylics. Oil refinements to come.

Thanks for checking in,

Brian
