Well, the obvious thing to start with would be a red. I use Cad red medium. I have gotten several good mixes with different colors. To that red you could mix raw umber. Or you could use some Paynes Gray. Or you could use a blue, I use Pthalo (SPARINGLY, this blue is a VERY strong color and tends to take over) with a touch of umber or black. I have even used black and yellow ochre (this yeailds a much more muddy color though!). In this case I would say, definitely experiment in small quantities until you get the desired mix. It also depends what you are painting and what the end result you desire is! Have fun playing with it!

Maroon is unfortunately a pretty vague colour term, like burgundy, beige, olive, mauve and a bunch of others.

But you can get any of the range of colours you might be aiming for using:
Cadmium Red Medium + Mars Black;
Cadmium Red Medium + Burnt Umber;
Cadmium Red Medium + French Ultramarine;
Cadmium Red Medium + Lamp Black;
Cadmium Red Medium + Prussian Blue;
Cadmium Red Medium + a phthalo blue;
Cadmium Red Medium + a phthalo green.

These are in rough opacity order, from most to least.

Dioxazine Violet + an orange will also give you the right sort of colour, even violet + yellow can work, but they won't be as opaque so coverage might be a problem.
