Hello,

I'm a newbie and I'm not sure where to post my question at. I'm interested in sculpting my own figures and to start making molds, then casting. I did find a company in Germany that seems to offer all the supplies, but I don't read German.

Can anyone recommend links or companies where I can get started at?

Thank you.

You might need to be more specific about your question and provide more info. Where are you? What are your needs? what do you plan to do? etc

Use search engine - this site has all basic themes, discussed over and over and over, you just need to find it.

Thank you Gaudin and Funky50. I have used search engines, but I'm not getting informative results back. I'd like to start making my own Roman Legions, siege equipment and fortifications. I will Google Alec Tiranti right now. And I will start digging into older pages on this site to see if I can find the information also.

They will have everything you need from sculpting waxes and silicone rubbers to tools

Oh, Alec Tiranti has an interesting shop and I think he has what I'm looking for. I have requested a catalog and I'll go from there. Thank you for your suggestions.

In terms of sculpting compounds here are some previous threads that should prove useful:

And last but not least this thread I started last year
Interested in sculpting but haven't tried?

*My post in this thread links on to three of the best tools threads here on pF which are must-sees if you haven't viewed them yet.

As I think is mentioned in one of the above threads a very basic toolset of just a couple of shaped cocktail sticks, a craft knife, a needle and a brush can work for sculpting nearly any figure, but most people prefer a little larger selection than this. I strongly recommend every beginning sculptor make at least a few of their own tools in wood or plastic to test out various shapes/profiles quickly and inexpensively, eventually you may want to go one step further and remake a few of them in steel for toughness and longevity.

Einion,

Thank you so much for the advice and the links. Doug from Alec Tiranti's shop was nice enough to respond to my email and gave me a rough outline of what I'll need to do. I will follow the links you provided and start reading up! I wish I would have found this place years ago...
