G-day Figureteers!

Im wondering if someone can recomend a matting medium for Humbrols. I know that Humbrol used to have their own, but it seems to be hard to find these days?

Or perhaps someone has a trick of their own?

Cheers

Well, at least Im able to update my own post after an inside tip from Mike Blank. His solution is to use paper, cardboard or preferably a wood block covered with masking tape, as a pallette. In this case a masking tape that is used by 1/1 painters and more paperlike than Tamiya.

I have just tried it and it helped alot but not completly on a hard case of Humbrol 62. This is used by Mike on acrylics, such as Vallejo, as well, to have a matt finnish.
Although I have not tried it on acrylics myself, yet.

I use Humbrols for most of my undercoating.
the best way to keep it matt if you are applying with brush is simply do not stir the paint ever ,dig out the pigment from the bottom of the tin put on something no absorbent and just add a little turps ,white spirit to make it flow ,this will make the paint dry matt in most cases but there is the odd colour that still refuses.
there should be no problem with the earth, greys and buffs. some of the reds are a bit reluctant to go matt.

What I do whenever possible is air brush that way it is always matt ,I just mix in the airbrush cup ,first a couple of drops of turps then the pigment straight from the bottom of the tin stir with an old brush and away you go.
I know this probably breaks all the airbrush rules but it works

Janne, I too, only use Humbrol. The best way I have found is to apply a thinned coat of satin varnish to the area you want to matt to seal it, then let it dry thoroughly. Once completely dry, apply Humbrol matt varnish, well mixed, straight from the tin. Has worked every time for me!

Also testors dullcote Laquer is excellent for this ....once you have finished painting give it a coat of testors and everything is nice and matt and evenly finished.....hope this helps....Kevin

By the way forgot to mention Ron is absolutely right I never stir the paint beforehand always just use the settled paint with white spirit which then gives you a lovely matt finish either with airbrush or brush......Kevin

Yip Testors spray will put the icing on the cake .
I remember when you could put humbrols straight on to a plastic revell kit with no primer and it dried matt ,no such thing as primers then:)
Alas they messed about with the formula and introduced Authentic colours and gradually everything started to go sticky and shiny .
A modelling mentor of mine by the name of Julian Bennasi used to search out the little back street shops to get the original paints ,but that was way back in the last Century

Showing my age here:D

I have heard a rumour that Hornby, who own the Humbrol brand, are to bring the paint manufacturing back to the UK, to try to regain the colour continuity and quality.
