Fort Ticonderoga: The Battle That Was None!

On May 10, 1775, the so-called “Battle of Ticonderoga” takes place during the American Revolutionary War.

In fact, it wasn't a "battle" at all!

200 American volunteers unde the colonels Ethan Allen...

…and Benedikt Arnold (who later defected to the British!)…

...surprise the small British garrison of Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain at sunrise...:

Only one shot is fired (fired by an American) and no one on either side is hurt!

Allen and Arnold walk through the quickly opened gate of the fort, which has been in a state of disrepair since the Franco-British War of 1758...

...enter the officers' quarters and Allan calls on the two British officers, who were surprised in their sleep, to surrender...:

A look out of the window tells the sleepy Britons that they don't stand a chance with their 64 men - of whom only 52 are soldiers.

They surrender without a fight.

Thus ends the first major combat action in the American Revolutionary War...

Later, this bloodless coup d'état was inflated into a "battle", with an assault attack...

… bloody combats…

... victory parade...

... and formell surrender ceremony...

All fictitious! But revolutions need their legends...
