The first shot between Italy and Austria-Hungary...!
The Kingdom of Italy, which before World War I was a member of the so-called "Triple Alliance" with the German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire...
...did not side with his allies when hostilities broke out in August 1914 - but declared himself neutral...:
Reason: The alliance case only applies if one of the alliance partners is attacked, but Germany is the aggressor due to its declaration of war against the Russian Tsarist Empire!
In reality, Italian politicians are already negotiating behind the scenes with the Entente powers to get the highest possible price for Italy's entry into the war on the Allied side!
When the price negotiated with the Allies (and separately with the British behind their backs) seemed acceptable to the Italians (guarantee and expansion of the Italian colonial possessions, part of the Greek islands, Albania and the Dalmatian Adriatic coast as well as the Austrian Trentino and the Isonzo region) Italy declares war on the Central Powers - its former allies - on May 23, 1915!
While Germany and Austria-Hungary seeth with anger...
... the allies openly cheer...:
On May 24, 1915, the first shot was fired at the Italian-Austrian border!
At exactly 04:00, Italian artillerymen opened fire on the Austrian lines from the border fortress of Fort Monte Verena over the Aosta Valley!
The Austrians, for their part, hurriedly bring 30 cm of mortar from their mortar battery No. 12, which had been in action in Flanders - and returned fire from June 10, 1915...:
30 shots a day destroy the fort so badly that the Italians have to give it up four days later...:
The remains of the facility that was shot down are still there today...:
