This brave young soldier took the full impact of a hand grenade lobbed into his Humvee, and saved the lives of four of his fellow soldiers.

A terrible waste of a young life.

Lest we forget.

not being an American I dont think its right for me to make comment on the GWB issue. But its seems fitting this young man was honoured by the top person in the USA at the moment.

RIP to a true hero

Gary
Bush is still the commander in chief of the military, like it or not ,most soldiers like Bush! look what happened to our military when both Carter and Clinton took office!
What we should do is stop all foreign aid and wars and worry about our own people and lets get educated as well as a new country wide public transportation network.a little health care might help those in need.

Ilija, you are right. We all have wars, victims, heros (and historical enemis). So this is a modeller site, not political. I want to read about history and not about actually.

Ilija and Black Army
Dont agree with you one bit. Not an American, but can see that this young man deserves great praise for what he has done. Laying down ones life to save his friends, whoever they are is an act of great courage.
Yes this is a modelling site but its posted under general discussion (Off topic threads go here please) so other things can be discussed whether you agree or not.
The young man in question, who may even have been a modeller, did not ask to go to war, he was sent by his goverment and as such his courage was honoured by their Commander in Chief. An honour indeed for his bravery.
I also notice that most people who post here model military subjects from every period of history. So how can someone say "dont post military subjects as I dont Like them". If you dont like the subject dont read them.
And Ilija if you dont like military posts then you should certainly not make attachments such as you did. Not exactly standing by your own standards are you!
Hope this doesnt start an ass kicking contest, its just my opinion on a post which was well headed as to its contents and if you dodnt like such things DONT READ THEM.

The main problem is that the scene for this act is a ongoing conflict thus making very easily political.

This hadnt so much of a problem if the happening were further back in time. But there could also similar threads with older origin that could be contorversal.

As a bad example, would be apreciate similar threads with focus on, lets say, suicide bombers?

Some things are to close in time and others will never be far away enough as there are different views of right and wrong. I think it does not strengthen the community. We are all members here and some has been here for a long time. "Dont read if you dont like" isnt actually an option.

And this is not to point finger or bashing but rather a gentle reminder. :)

Cheers

My point was one of pointing out that it was not a political item but one of honouring a young marine. Dont care whos side he was on, it was a very brave act, one done many times by soldiers all over the world and as far back in history as anyone cares to go.
The political point raised was by Gary who, for his own reasons does not care much for his President, I in turn named him as the Commander in Chief.
I did not write as a political point of any sort but do feel in a general discussion that if you dont like it dont read it is a valid point.
BTW been here for a while, just choose not to post to often, as is also a right. Accept your gentle reminder but think its for a point I did not raise, as you may notice I stated I didnt want to start an ass kicking contest.

Very well put Chris

Its not about kicking any ass. Its about showing respect and avoiding bad athmosphere in the forums.

Its about that this subject becomes political no matter what we personally think. First because the scene took place in a ongoing conflict with much controversy in it. Secondly as Gary commented on the Bush adminstration.

This site has never been "if you dont like, dont read" and its certainly not the constructive way too meet the criticism.

Cheers

...look what happened to our military when both Carter and Clinton took office!...

For one thing, they died less frequently.

I have respect for the young man who gave his life to save his comrades, but this subject has been discussed here, and elsewhere, because a politician made a media event of the awarding of the decoration.

We may be forgetting one thing here, this young man volunteered. Nobody forced this Marine to join and fight in Mr. Bush's war. I believe this young man had a conviction that most or none of us will ever understand.

While I'm angered that so many young American lives are being lost over "questionable" policies, I'm also extremely proud...and grateful that young Americans are this passionate over their country. And serve no matter where or why. I think Chris has a point, many soldiers are supportive of Bush. I'm afraid to say that, but it's true. Getting back to my first point. These soldiers, men and women unselfeshly JOINED, signed a contract and know the consequences. Now, who's at fault here? The parents? No, most of these young people joined for reasons like so many before...Adventure.

It's easy for me to say, who has never served, sitting in my air conditioned home and painting "little people", that I'm proud of those young men and women who serve our country unselfeshly...No matter how bad the politics are. These young people will probably tell you, like so many soldiers before, that they put their lives on the line not for us but for their buddies.

And I don't think the award ceremony was a media circus. It was done appropriately to recognize a brave Marine. Sorry, I didn't see it on CNN or CBS.

This is the great thing about my country, I can say these things under the freedoms that these young people/soldiers provide.

I know I've lit a fire under a few bums so let it fly!

In my opinion, it would have been most appropriate to invite the young man's parents to the White House. In the privacy of the Oval Office, the Commander-in-Chief could have expressed his condolences on a personal level, expressed sympathy and gratitude on behalf of the nation, perhaps learned something about the young man from his parents, and presented the decoration without the presence of the press corps or the television cameras.

Had that occurred, "worthy of the honor" would have a significant meaning.

Medal Of Honor ceremonies are always done with a media press conference style of ceremony. I am sure the president met with the parents before the ceremony. The Medal Of Honor is our countries highest decoration. I believe the ceremony should be shown on and in the media. Who doesnt want to see or hear about a Hero? Especially in this day and age when the "X" generation, etc. seem to be more selfish than ever. It is refreshing to hear about a young man being so unselfish who gave everything he possible could for others.
If more people in this world would think more about giving and helping others instead of always expecting the government and others to give them everything maybe this world would be a little better.

Given it's the nation's highest honor it should be televised. Likewise I think the country should also be able to see flag drapped coffins being brought back from wherever the service person fell. Though the government will say that it's a privacy issue, I think it has more to do with the moral of the country more than anything. It's one thing to see the number of casualties flashed across a screen and quite another to actually see the true cost of war. In some ways it's too bad that we do not have some sort of mandatory military service as a lot of people take what we (both rich and poor) have as a people taken for granted. ~Gary
