Hi Folks

This has been suggested by email to me

Rather than a FOTM style think about just a gallery of images each month.

Something that’s positive but not competitive..award a discount vs a piece, and that discount apply to all who enter..if their parents steal the discount shame on them..lol !!!

Something that celebrates the effort..not somebody beating others..you won’t attract a single person to the hobby via competitions.

I bend the knee to those more up to date with the PC way with young people. But I am sorry I do not hold with this ethos of having school sports days with no winners. I believe that healthy competition encourages the will to improve. With each entry being judged on age & skill level.

I am one of those just seeing this thread, so not apathic just selective in reading threads. Although to be frank a bit annoyed by the ‘assertive’ statements made, let me contribute my two cents.

Firstly, the ratio of number of responses to nr of views is a more honest measure of interest that the actual text or votes posted. The same happens at the other sections on PF and other sites, such as Putty and Paint.
People love to praise, but don’t bother with the more difficult task of sharing critique.
So no response means no interest.
I realize it is not nice to get a negative response to an idea you love, but it’s a valid response, albeit indirect.

Having said that I am sympathetic to the idea of creating an opening to youngsters on the forum, but would suggest a subsection for junior entries rather than a competition. Not sure which sensitivities are meant in other posts? If there is even an indication of any slippery slope or other issues, just forget the whole idea.

Than a final thing: Does anyone have any idea how many youngsters are actually interested to take part? I’d be surprised if there would be more than two or three, but we live and learn, so....

Thoughtful idea.....So why wouldn't it be kept simple and just add a novice category somewhere on PF. Why does everything have to be so competitive? What happened to good ole drive for personal satisfaction. I agree with Adrian when he says "I'd be surprised to find more than two or three" and I would say that's being generous. Anyway, that's my nugget of fools gold.

Hi Paul.
I thank you for the input. I suppose it an age thing and a want to be accurate. I think we are all guilty of wishing some uniforms were different colours as some can be garish. I think this is why a lot of nippers do fantasy.

After due reflection I don't agree with a junior FOTM. I don't think age or even sex is a consideration here - painters of all ages and either sex
are novices or experienced. So for me it's more a question of generally encouraging the neophytes whoever they may be, and not necessarily
just the young.

On another site a Jr. Member shows stuff done in conjunction with the dad,the Jr members name and age isn't mentioned but the subject matter is shown with an explanation of what Jr has/hasn't done,suggested,agreed or disagreed with. This works very well and all feed back is shown or passed on to Jr. This seems to work well and I believe the comments have encouraged Jr to carry on and increase his /her interest

I've already said my piece on this thought. But haven't yet seen anything posted from a father of a young kid who has interest. I go to model shows and hardly ever see any young ones. There's even a make and take where the kids can put together a model kit and take it home with nobody at the table. I've even bought models for relatives and neighbors kids that end up in a garage sale. We're in a different world now my friends. I still might suggest a novice category of some sorts and at least the option is there, even if it's used by young or old.

First of all...how many "youngsters" ( age from ?? to ?? ) are (active) members of this forum?
If the answer is "none" or "very few" it will not be very succesfull.
We have a hobby that's not really cheap. You have to buy all the tools of the trade and of course a constant flow of new figures.
Ever calculated how much you spend on the hobby each year....
If you compare that with the costs of a computergame that can be played with people all over the world and a 1000 times ......
And last but not least...every generation chooses it's own hobby. Who is collecting stamps or sigarwraps nowadays? Who still goes hoolahooping on a saturday...
And last but not least....why do we, the old people, suggest a junior-FOTM. If there's a need the youngsters here would have suggested that. We could start with a special youngsters-section with "completed figures" or "on the workbench" to see if there's any movement there.

I'm not planning to make a big fuzz out of this but I (just) don't get it.
What's "sad" about kids that love to play Computer games ( and do sports, go to concerts, have a bunch of friends..... ? ) How many kids did you know when you were young who didn't go out but spend their time "reading books" ........
What's wrong with kids wanting to reach that level of skill so they can be 'the best of the best' ? How many kids did you know that were only busy with sports trying to become the new Cruyff or so.....?
How many hours did you spend torturing the neighbours with your guitar or drumkit hoping one day you would fill a stadion?
And finally......how old were you when you seriously picked up your hobby ???
So, it's not what kids do today....it's what they will do when they stop being a kid.....and there's a great chance they will pick up "Figure-painting" or so.
Thing's weren't better in our days ( when we're talking hobbies and music, not religion and politics....), things were different.

You miss my point, HansDig.

I just meant that it's sad for the hobby that few young people are it taking up. I wasn't saying that they "should" be doing it instead of playing computer games. Or that computer games themselves are "sad" (au contraire mon ami - in my own limited experience, they can be a lot of fun). See the difference?! And there's nothing "sad" about winning a share of a $30 million prize pot. Good luck to 'em if they're that good at it!

As for things being different for our generation - of course they were! And give it another 20 or 30 years and today's kids will probably be lamenting about how gaming has become an old codgers' hobby - because by then the Next Big Thing will have come along and taken its place.

I really believe that the new generations have different amusements, I hope that some of us will take over, but in the meetings or contests that I attend in my country the panorama is not very good.

My suggestion is we have Junior section where parents can post their sons/daughters pieces .....

Let this run till /end Sept early October and based on the response decide if it's worth doing a gallery

A lot of very valid points,my son (now 26) started with Warhammer and got to a good standard but moved on to a form of Karate,got. His black belt,then came BMX,then girls!! Nights out with the lads,drums and now guitar, I think work is in there somewhere!! It's hard and as parents we can only guide. To some extent I think its sort of in you to do it if that makes sense,nobody in my family did I just enjoyed it and kept it up on and off. I guess with that even in the computer savvy world it will take a parent,guardian or relative to introduce the youngsters to this site.
