Hello friends. I have just returned from 2 weeks in Italy(Rome,Florence,Venice,Milan,Sienna and Asissi) I know,I know, not gloating ;)
Anyway, while there I picked up a couple of kits and also the typical tourist tat of a 22cm replica of 'David' It is a surprisingly good likeness and I had the insane Idea, well my wife thought it was, in the hotel that night of building a dio of Michelangelos studio and him working on the statue.
Sober reflection over breakfast in the morning made me think where would I find a figure suitable to portray the Florentine genius. The real david is 434cm tall while the figure is 22cm.Taking an average height for a man as 180 would make a inscale figure of around 90mm.
I know some of you have an almost Delphic oracle knowledge of whats out there,so can you help??
From written testimony and a reconstruction on the BBC which I taped a while ago he would have worn a brown cassock like affair and boots.By the way he did not take off his boots for something like 2 years and when the stitches finally gave way they fell off, taking most of the skin of his feet with them
He had short hair and a beard also.
So,can anyone give any Ideas?? I would much appreciate it.Now I have the idea in my head it won't go away.
By the way,my sculpting skills are non-existent,so no help there.
Many many thanks in advance.
Jim.
Ex-pat Brit in Warsaw,Poland.
PS.....Has anyone tried M.Model figures from here in Poland?? Really fine kits. The Polish winged Hussar in 90mm is a gem.

Hello Jim,

I can't help you with the figure but I watched the BBC documentary and also found it quite inspiring.

Hopefully, it has been released on DVD along with a second film on the 'other' Renaissance genius, Leonardo Da Vinci. Well worth getting.

Cheers,
Quang :)

Hi Jim, if the David replica is really good maybe wait until you can convert or scratchbuild your Michelangelo to match? I have a couple of projects on the back burner for years until I can do them justice as I see it and I'm sure I'm not the only one

No need to mess about with average height here - work out the scale then decide what height you want Michelangelo to be and work accordingly. Average height even today is only about 1.73m is the West (5'8") but unless there's anything written about S. Buonorroti that you could use as a guide to his height I'd make him between 88mm and 90mm tall (between 5'8" and 5'10") so a 90 would work fine anyway.

Just to check, the 4.3m height I think is from sole of foot to crown so obviously you have to measure the cast accordingly, ignoring the plinth (the statue is ~5.4m inclusive from what I could find quickly).

A portrait of Michelangelo here in case you don't know it. He's obviously a lot older than when he worked on David (he was only 29 when it was completed) but at least it'll give you some idea of his facial structure.
