The Kit / Subject.
This was a very difficult subject to research as there is very little information about. I would like to thank Ruth Evans and the rest of the staff at the Regiments Museum for all the help & assistance in producing this piece.

This Bust is based on the R Simkin print of a Piper of the 3rd Battalion (Tyrone Militia ) Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers 1900. The Tyrone Militia was one of the two Militia battalions that made up the reserve for the Inniskilling Fusiliers. As The Tyrone Militia did not fall in with the remit of Mick’s Mick’s . Enquiries were made with the museum and I was informed that the 1st Btn, ( 27th Foot prior to 1881) Did have traditional Irish Pipers as far back as the late 1700 s. But it is my understanding that they remained in Ireland. It is my belief that they were on the books in either the corps of Drums or the Band and wore the traditional Irish Pipers dress for Officers Mess functions and high days & holidays. They first appeared in England at Bournemouth in 1910. Where they wore a normal Bandsman uniform.

As stated above This Bust is based on the best information to hand and a little best guessing.

In relation to the Tunic & Shawl colour I have received differing accounts.
The Museum stated.
French Gray Tunic & Shawl.
Other reliable sources have said a combination of:-
French Gray Tunic, Dark Green Shawl.
Dark Green Tunic, French Gray Shawl.
Dark Green Tunic & Shawl.

OPTION No.1 ( Showing kilt 2/3 rds)

The figure looks great but the model bagpipes have a number of major problems.
I am a piper & would urge the sculptor to check any the many sources on the internet to rectify these.

???? Bagpipes have a number of major problems.????

Re Fatboy-66 Post on this thread. Quote “The figure looks great but the model bagpipes have a number of major problems.I am a piper & would urge the sculptor to check any the many sources on the internet to rectify these.”
I asked Fatboy-66 to Evidence his comment. Todate we have not received any comment from him although he has logged into PF several times and this thread in particular.

It is a matter of fact that the Irish Regiments during this period of time and upto I believe the 1960s Played the Irish War Pipes that had two drones. One base & one tenor. Unlike the Highland Pipes played by Scottish Regiments who had three drones one base & two tenors.

Please see the four pictures that give an example of Irish Pipes.

As for the makeup of the pipes please see the picture of the set of Irish Pipes given to Offo to work from. The only difference being I requested an older style chanter which has a round flat base. I think you will agree Offo has sculpted the pipes to a ‘T’

In conclusion I feel that this is just another example of a self proclaimed expert that knows little or nothing about the subject he is trying to talk about.

Mick

Hi Mick,
Sorry but I didn't see your comment until today.
Very interested to learn about the single tenor drone on the great irish warpipes.

However my chief concerns were not the drones but were about -
1. Bagpipe size - To my eyes the pipes look too small for the figure. See notes below.
2. Drone cords - There are no drone cords & tassels as shown in your references.

The dimensions & construction of the warpipes & highland pipes look very similar from all the reference photos I was able to find.
Therefore the actual dimensions of highland bagpipes may be of use to compare against the 1/9 model scale.
Blow stick ~360mm Chanter ~360mm
Tenor Drone ~420mm Base Drone ~900mm diameter at base ~35mm
Bag (deflated) roughly 480 x 180mm

As a modeller who has played the pipes for 20 year I intended my comments to be constructive.
I leave them with you & will not be entering into further correspondence.

Best wishes ... Ian
