Hi All,

just bought my copy of the above. I was disappointed with the quality of the pictures, fuzzy and quite washed out in some cases. Quite a number of pics were of military vehicles, a trend moving away from figure coverage.

I rather liked the theme covered by the Best of show winner, but my favourite of the entries was the trench digger WWI.

Just sharing my thoughts.

Hi Victor
I tend to agree with you ,and too many tanks.I suppose i shouldn't complain too much as they included pictures of 2 of my figures.
Brian

Did the pics reflect the quality of work?

Hi Guys,

Given that these pics weren't great, it does not show the true quality of the works on display.

Perusing the mag again, I did like one very innovative display - the WWI Tipperary vignette of troops marching into an open book. I was mildly surprised that it didn't merit anything.

Anyway, here's looking to next year's show.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy? I've looked everywhere in my area. South West England

i thought it was a over priced dead loss when you compare it to the US/EUROPE mags that are on the market covering this hobby. it's no wonder the mag is in trouble if thats the best they can offer forthe show case event in the UK. dave.

Hi Dave,

I didn't know that MiMod mag was in trouble? I think that the main focus of the hobby has always been 1/35 scale armour and related modelling. MilMod merely reflects this trend. Rgds Victor

I buy Military Modelling but I'm looking for an alternative - any chance you can give me the names of these other mags? My local newsagent's a bit naff, but I'll happily subscribe to a mag if it's good enough.

I've pretty much given up on buying MM. Although the mag focus was generally armour I always looked forward to their special editions, in particular the figure only and EuroMilitaire. I even have a couple of their pictorial issues of Brit army regiments/uniforms akin to the old (and sadly demised) 'Regiment' mag

Hi all

Yep I've given up on MM as well. Pity as there are occassional gems among the articles but as I don't live near a newsagent where I could browse before buying the only option would be to subscribe.

Check out Bonapartes in the UK to subscribe to several US/European figure mags.

Hi All,

a little bit of reminising here. There used to be Military Modeller USA. One issue (my alltime favourite) featured a Yankee Doodle Diorama. The various articles by Beverly Gordon were great too.
Campaigns, Tradition were great on uniforms - back copies can still be bought at Tradition UK.
Old Airfix- for those terrific Sid Horton articles
Early Mil Mod mags- some pretty nice figure articles an nice pics.
Military Hobbies - quirky, poor cousin to Mil Mod.
Figurines - Terrific pics, all in French!!! Frustrating.
Hist Miniatures - probably the best of the lot because the articles are in English.

Victor:

How times have changed. Remember when Military Illustrated was just that. Great artwork from Volstad, Fosten, Embleton, McBride et al and a load of colour re-enactor photos. I personally lost interest around issue 95.

As for Figurines, it makes me wish I had paid more attention to my French studies back in my younger days. I have to get my bi-lingual sons to translate the articles for me, which is just as frustrating trying to fit this in to their busy teenage lives:)

Regards
Paul

hi michael. i think your best bet would be to try and get to a show where bonaparts are one of the traders or if your near bristol go to the shop. they carry a good range of mags but some are in french all have great photo's. historical miniatures is a yank mag and with some good ariticals and great photo's of shows. but these mags are mostly figure based . dave.

MI - Now that WAS good then

Hello Paul,

Yeah, MI was good too. I also lost interest about issue 110. It used to focus on specific details not found in general coverage. As was promised by Embleton (first editor), illustrations were the raison d erte.
Nowadays, present coverage appears to mirror "Military History".

Paul, Mil Iil WAS an awesome magazine at one time. Now the magazine looks just like one of the many military history magazines we see on the stands. ~Gary
