I dont want to beat a dead horse, but thought it only fair to post Bob Cotrell's replies. He visisted the web site last nite, read this series of posts, and did not join PF, so no reply posted. He did send me 2 e-mails and I have pasted his replies below. The first e-mail specifically addresses historical accuracy. The 2nd e-mail explains the original intent of this new release, whereby the actual torso of this figure is meant to be used for almost any of Bob's potrait head series:
1) "(Moseby's) coats were often changed as was his hat. He eschewed the saber but wore it often (at least for photographs). Early he was clean shaven but later wore a short beard. He made it a habit to vary his appearance. Thus The Gray Ghost."
2) "MB-05 wears a sack coat. This was a "less formal" uniform favored by Lee, A.P. Hill, Jubal Early, and many "lesser lights." It is conspicuously absent from the world of model figures. Arms & Equipment of the Confederacy (Time/Life) shows it as an artillery officer's coat. Ol' Jube also wore the accompanying vest. In fact, at the 3rd Battle Of Winchester
Early's rank was so inconspicuous some artillerymen who were berated for trying to clear a blocked cannon tube said, "Mind your own business you old clodhopper" or words to that effect.
Lee wore a sack coat with a white shirt and black tie. The only insignia was a modest general's set of stars.
As you know, MB-05 was intended as a "universal" basis for the portrait heads. I selected a sack coat to provide another option for modelers. Maybe we should invoke the "raisin bread" model. If you find a fly in our raisin bread, send us the fly and we'll send you a raisin. If you don't like Mosby, send us his head.........
The belt buckle is a plain one (exclusive of ornamentation). This may provide an opportunity to sell some Nimix photoetch. Certainly, not all Confederates had CSA engraved on their belt buckles (besides, some people may want to swap the legs to a Union officer [ of course they could file off the CSA as I do with Shenandoah figures]). Buckle: yes; engraving: no."
