What is the origin of the shield design on this figure - a yellow heater shield with a diagonal white stripe superimposed on a black disk. I'm aware of the Osprey illustration and the Sol, Seil, and Andrea figures that are based on it, but I haven't found any other info on it. Nothing even close Was it a family or city heraldic design? Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but for continuity's sake I'm tacking on my question here.

Cheers,

Glen

This is the provenance of the heraldry depicted in Embleton's illustration (A1) in Italian Medieval Armies, 1300-1500 (MAA 136) (London: Osprey, 1983). Regrettably, I cannot provide additional details; however, I will say that if it indeed represents participants at a tournament, most likely they are personal/familial arms.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Augie. I do have the book, but I wasn't sure if I was looking at something real or conjectural based on a description. I tried searching for more info on the web , but came up empty. Even the leather armor seems to be a somewhat unique design. Everyone will likely be painting this figure the same way and I was hoping for some variety.

Cheers,

Glen

Hi Glen,

The harness is loosely based on effigies in the Cathedrals of Salerno and Lucera; while the helm and crest were inspired by a bas-relief on the exterior of the Bargello (Firenze). Thus, the illustration that spawned the releases is actually a composite of a span of some 40 years: ca. 1285-1325. And this, in and of itself, provides quite a bit of latitude.

The cuir bouilli can be depicted to taste: tanned and/or leafed and/or painted. The trick will be, as with most Italian armigers of the period, to find suitable heraldry to play off of. . .

Above all. . . ENJOY!

Augie
