Maybe my command of English language is not strong enough but my question was if a soldier of that time would carry a color saved from the enemy in that way wrapped like a towel around his shoulders.
Back then colors represented strong values or the king in person (who sometimes donated the color) and would have been treated with the greatest care even if torn and tattered.
The story about the burnt flag should just illustrate that even in our days flags and their treatment are still driven by the values we associate to them otherwise the flag would have seen the laundry and been put back into service.
Whatever - my question most probably can be answered according to everybodies own view. Let´s leave it as an open question.
I guess artisticly it was a necessary solution to show a larger part of the colors on the bust.
