Hi Mr Cannonball

Very nice start on the uniform colour , really beginning to look the part .

Sure you know , the lacework has a distinctive red edging as well

Interested how your going to do the black facing colours

This and the 17th bust is really nice to follow

I worked on my one in mess kit yesterday ,so many variations on the "yellows" for sure in the references !...will post pics when I can inbetween family stuff!

Enjoy Boxing Day

Nap

Have you seen these the SK Miniatures and Hawk Miniatures British Offcer Indian Army bust ?

The first by Carl Reid , the 2nd by Rob Lane

Hi Nap. The colour for the tunic does seem to have a lot of scope for interpretation as you say. The Chota Sahib kit instructions posted earlier by Pierre make a point of classing the “yellow “ as more mustard yet the uniform reference pictures you posted are or appear to be a more conventional yellow. It might just be the lighting or wear on the items pictured but it does make it tricky. Those other busts look interesting, might have to have a look at these.

Agree there "mustard" , "lemon yellow" , my version of mess kit is more yellow...ish !!

Don't know about you with the oils but it's knowing when to stop to avoid loosing all the shadows/highs etc ...well for me it is .....and it always looks better than what I photograph !!

The 2 others are really nice pieces as well ...PF member Geoff Charman also did a SK version , the other is the box art from I believe painted by Eddy Vandersteen ( love the way he paints ...saw this at Expo ...stunning )

There is also a British officer from the Guides by Steve Leadley released by Mitches a whike back

Happy painting

I’ve managed to get a bit more done with this bust. After leaving the initial oil base colour for the kurta overnight it had started to dry a shade or two darker. As a result I went back at it with a mix of Naples Yellow dark, Naples Yellow and a touch of Titanium white plus a touch of Cadmium yellow and worked it into the high areas to try and lift what was quite a drab sandy yellow. I’ve basecoated the full head dress now in enamel roughing in the different sections. Started on the lace and chain mail epaulettes and need to decide on what medals he’s going to be wearing. Fortunately there is some good reference material on this subject in Nap’s thread on his Skinners Horse Officer in Mess dress.

Hi there Cannoball

Uniform yellow looking good now

Will the embroidery be having a red edging as well

Now the fleshtones really "zing" against the contrast of the yellow

Thanks for sharing

Hi Nap. Yeah, not forgotten the red edging. Going to let the golds dry a bit before tackling that.

Thought so !! will you be shadowing and highlighting the golds further

Sorry to ask but have we met ..perhaps at Euro ?

Looking forward to seeing more on this beauty of a bust

Nap
Hi Nap, yeah I spoke to you briefly at the RP stand. I’ve done a first hit on the gold shading/highlighting but will go back once it’s dry.

I’ve managed to do a little bit more on this. I’ve added the red trim to the lacework and done some work filling in the sections on the pugari. I’ve decided on the Indian General Service medal and China Service medal. Still got the blue stripes to add on the IGSM. Done a little bit more on the lace and shoulder chain backing but it’s slowly coming together.

Hi Nap. I’m using oil paints for the metallics, a mix of Renaissance Gold and Gold. I’ve been shading with Burnt Umber or sometimes Sepia and highlighting with a mix of gold and silver and pure silver on the high highs. In the past I’ve mixed yellow or white into the gold but it always seemed to turn out a bit sludgy. The more I work on this bust the more I think it’s got a look of Errol Flynn.

Hi Cannonball

Been reading the Rothero book regarding facings .....on both this uniform and my mess dress they are stated as being "black velvet"........

So my question is : whats to best way to represent this material .......I was thinking a 50/50 mix of Matt/Satin varnish ?

Would appreciate anyones thoughts and ideas

Hi Nap, not so sure what to suggest with regards to acrylics to get a realistic velvet effect but I note from your thread you might have stumbled across an effect your happy with by chance. Sometimes it just happens like this. For the oils I mixed a very dark grey from black and white and added some french ultramarine blue for a richness then highlighted with Naples Yellow.

Hi Neal

I sorted it to a happy version, water soluable oils lamp back mixed together with P3 Thamar Thamar black

Will look at it again once the flesh is done

Happy benchtime

Hi Neal

Did I miss the finished piece ?

Nap
Hi Kev, no you didn’t. I’ve been waiting on some bases which arrived recently so hopefully I’ll get the finishing touches done shortly and post some finished pictures.
