"This is a great bust of a Free French Legionnaire from
the Battle of Bir Hacheim in the Western Desert near
the port of Tobruk during May/June 1942. It portrays
a Legionnaire from the 13th Half ("Demi-") Brigade of
the Legion Etrangere (French Foreign Legion) which was
part of the 1st Free French Brigade. The 1st Free
French fought valiantly for 16 days defending Bir
Hacheim against the onslaught of Rommel's offensive.
Their 16 days resistance at Bir Hacheim delayed
Rommel's offensive and gave the then retreating
British Eighth Army enough time to escape and regroup
at El Alamein. This action would later help prevent
Rommel and the Afrika Korps from seizing Egypt and the
strategically important Suez Canal."
