Still going

Hi Steve and David,

Thanks for your encouragement fellas. It's greatly appreciated.:)

Here are the latest WIP shots.

I've added some Burnt Sienna to the mid shadow skin tones and still washing Van Dyke Brown on the uniform to deepen the contrast. I haven't done any highlighting on the uniform yet.

Hey Tony,
Looking good mate, the uniform looks a lot better with more depth. Cant beat the old oils Hey!!!! No, really, I think he looks a lot better. I look back at some old kits and think how I could improve on it now, but then I look at my grey army and think, Nah!, might start on that new one instead.

PS is there a meeting on Tuesday night?

Monash..in oils

evening cobber...
now what l saying is...oils are like a good soft but thick paper strong etc.. where as the other is like a thin paper and ones finger goses through it and etc. etc.... :)

Did you have a figure meeting today......Phil....

Bingo, big fella , looks great, the oils give him more depth and life, well done , talk to you soon.
Cheers
Al

Thanks Ben, Phil and Al,

The added depth from the oil paint certainly does seem to have lifted the appearance of this bust. After painting in oils for nearly 20 years, and acrylics for the past 5 years, I can now combine what I've learned about both mediums and use them together.

Thanks for your encouragement fellas. It's great to have your feedback.

Ben,not sure about HMFS this week. I'll check and get back to you.

Hello, Tony.
Looking very excellent!
I think it's a very wonderful work.
It's pleasant for your contribution.

Thank you my friend,

I'm very pleased that you like my bust.

I hope to finish it soon, but I don't want to rush.

I've done some more work on it over the weekend and will post some new pics soon.

Looking good so far Tony.

One thing that is skewing my colour perception (apart from a tired monitor, internet settings, hang overs....:D) is the different backgrounds used, ie Blue (oils) to Tan (Acrylics).

It's easy to see the richness of the oils (great colour depth) just a bit challenging to do a side by side with different backgrounds....

Or perhaps I should take some Berocca hang over fizz whiz tablets!:D;)

Looking good.

Have you had to alter your painting style from Acrylics to Oils?

Cheers

Making progress

Hi Jamie,

Thanks once again for your encouragement and feedback.:)

Actually the way I'm using oils is very similar to the way I paint with acrylics. Very thin layers of oil paint are applied in a series of very thin washes (90% white spirits/10% oils) to build up colours in graduated layers, hopefully creating smooth and gradual transitions from shadows to highlights.;)

I took the bust to my figure modelling club last night, and was pleased to get some very helpful, insightful and positive feedback from my esteemed clubmates.:D

After receiving their critques, I've been working on the face and eyes, trying to create a warmer, less "washed out" skintone by adding subtle washes of burnt sienna and vermillion to the highlight areas and slightly enlarging the pupils and repainting them. I'll also try to add some stubble along the hairline around the back of the neck and the ears, to soften the edge.

Still a lot to do, but its getting closer to being finished.:D

Bugger!

Today I took my scratch built bust of Monash to WASMEx, and he was damaged on the way there.:( My fault, I should have packed him more carefully.:(:(

Unfortunately, I can't repair the damage and he won't be coming with me to Euro as I had hoped.:(:(:(

I'm absolutely gutted.:(:(:(:(:(

Tony, sorry to hear about your mishap, what a bummer when that happens :mad::( If it's any consolation, I'm sure following your visit to Euro you'll be going home with an extra large grey army to keep you busy for quite a while.
Is it totally un-repairable or just that there's not enough time to mend for Euro.
Keep your chin up Matey.

Cheers Ken

Cheers Ken,

It's comforting to receive your consoling words. As for the Monash bust, it's not destroyed but its not repairable and certainly not before next tuesday when I leave for the UK.

The one consolotion (apart from being able to recruit a new Grey Army at Euro) is that I've learnt a valuable lesson about the importance of safely transporting my figures, and I'm even more determined to keep sculpting and one day return to Euro with some of my own creations.

Hello Tony,

looks very nice, the oils have much more depth than the acrylic.
Around the eyes, mouth etc - and I love the sculpt too.
Congratualtions.

Though I very sorry to hear that he got damaged in transit.
